The Jamestown is situated in the Colony of Virginia and is the first permanent settlement of the English in America. It was established as James Fort and was capital of the colony of Virginia from 1616 to 1699. Even today, the language, government, customs, aspirations, and beliefs are a part of the heritage of United States.

The Virginia Company of London sponsored it and thought the venture could give them profit. In late December 1606, 100 colonists started moving from England on three ships: the Godspeed, the Susan Constant, and the Discovery. By the next April, they managed to reach the Chesapeake Bay late and formed a governing council to search for the settlement site.

John Smith was the first explorer to map out the Chesapeake Bay area and New England. He was a leader of the Virginia Colony based in Jamestown between September 1608 and August 1609. Captain John Smith founded and  became the colony’s leader  in September 1608. He was  determined to make Jamestown a better place. So he established a “no work, no food” policy.  Smith had been smart in trading with the Powhatan Indians for food. However, in the fall of 1609 he was injured  by burning gunpowder and left for England.  Smith never returned to Virginia. Smith’s departure was followed by the “starving time,” a period of warfare between the colonists and Indians and the deaths of many English men and women from starvation and disease.  Just when the colonists decided to abandon Jamestown in Spring 1610, settlers with supplies arrived from England, eager to find wealth in Virginia.
