Eye for an eye Examples

Some famous examples of an eye for an eye were found in biblical and historical textbooks. The first ever example was in “Hammurabi’s Code”, a collection of 282 laws inscribed on a stone pillar from Mesopotamia. One of those laws state that “if a man has destroyed the eye of a man of the gentleman class, they shall destroy his eye”. This law was where we got the phrase from. It was also a commandment found in Exodus 21:23-27. This belief was used in Ancient Rome, where the Romans used a law called the Law of Retaliation. This law stated that if a person were to be injured by another person, they could inflict the same injury to them.

Some common misconceptions about this belief is that you’re not literally tearing someone’s eyes out, it’s just a metaphor for justice and retribution. It was also only used in ancient times and was discarded in modern times cause everyone had a better justice system, and “an eye for an eye” was not a very good concept.
