I think he is disturbed because he was never treated with love in his childhood, or been complemented and when the grandmother reaches out to him he panics. we can see this when he talks about his father being a murderer as well, and how sourly he talks about the past. The grandmother reaching out is inconsistent with her attitude before the accident because before everything she does bedfore is for her advantage, we can see this for example in "She wanted to visit some connections in Tennessee and she was siezing every chance to change Bailey's mind.

The Misfit's Lack of Love

In my opinion, The Misfit was disturbed by the touch of the grandmother because he has never been shown love or affection. For him, this kind of attitude of a person is unknown and he doesn’t know how to act towards this kind of behavior. Since The Misfit’s father was a killer and a criminal he didn’t treat his son like one. For him, he didn’t really had a father who would have showed him how to act properly and how to differ from right and wrong. As a child, The Misfit never had someone by his side to express love and affection, so when the grandmother showed him some caring, he feels distanced and feels something unknown. When the author states, “The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest” (O’Connor 132). The Misfit sees this behavior so strangely that he reacts very bad, eventually kills the grandmother. This kind of behavior form the grandmother is unusual, since she has never showed this kind of affection towards anyone else. So I believe that he behaves this way towards the Mischief to prevent him from killing her, since she only cares about herself.
