The grief of Norma may have been the antidote that ultimately drove Love to his insanity of pursuing numerous woman under false belief  that each woman is indeed "His" Norma.Thus, deserting the women to their gruesome fate of being bleggen to death after denying each accusation of being Norma. I think that the young man might have proposed Norma (bring her flowers) and Norma had refused them. They then got in a fight and the young man had accidentally killed her (hammer involved).
He is not murdering women while trying to find Norma because he is crazy and upset. The reason why he killed the women was because they  claim not to be Norma.
His behaviour is due to  some repressed experiences as a child. He is now expressing those feelings in a negative way by killing women. The real norma probably died by accident or he killed her and that is why he going crazy for her still even if she died 10 years ago. Maybe it was the hammer man mistake that norma died and he is guilty and trying to look for her everywhere. He has anxiety problems. (just like my dog)
