Post #5 Red Flag: Suppression by Authority

Definition: To keep important information out of the public's eye, often used by the government.
Example: Everyone has secrets, especially the government. Sometimes these secrets get released. An example of suppression by authority is when the group of men that broke into the DNC headquarters at the Watergate complex, and got caught. It turned out that the money they had on them was traced to a fund used by a committee to keep President Nixon in the game, and re-elect him. The President was able to suppress this for a while, but hard evidence was released that proved he was guilty.
Connection: Here is a video that shows some more information that President Nixon suppressed, and people believed him for a while, because he was the president.

Definition: A way individuals use their intelligence to confuse others. Using big words and compacting useless information to make others believe their argument is correct.
Connection: This video goes a little more into depth about this topic. It gives good examples of proof by verbosity.

Post #8 Reason for Belief: Simplicity

Definition: Coincidences happen all the time. Usually, there is a scientific explanation most people may not understand. So, going for the easy answer is simple. In reality these coincidences happen due to the law of large numbers.
Example: I had a super bad feeling one day at school. When I got home my parents told me my aunt had passed away. Am I psychic? That would be awesome, but no.
Connection: This quote says it all. It is easier to believe the simple answer, rather than do research and potentially be wrong.

Definition: A distraction. Red Herring is something that takes your thoughts away from the original topic.
Connection: Parents know this red flag very well. When you take a child out in public they usually want something. Parents try to distract their mind away from what they want by something else. In this photo, the mom is red herring.

Definition: Finding information/ evidence that supports you own beliefs/theories, as opposed to searching for other alternatives.
Example: My personal belief in aliens. From my dad convincing me since I was a kid, to watching many T.V shows such as "Ancient Aliens". I always find myself searching for evidence that supports my theory rather than evidence that proves otherwise.
Connection: This photo is self explanatory. Most people do seek confirmation bias, as they usually are looking for proof to support their theories.

Definition: Believing someone based on their "role". Because they are an "authority" (or well known person), they must be right.
Connection: A lot of people look up to celebrities, so companies like to use their faces to promote their products. A good example is this video of Aveeno using Jennifer Anniston to promote their cream.

Definition: It is natural for us, as humans, to look for patterns in everything we see. Patternicity is just that-tendency to find patterns.
Connection: A very common thing people see is faces. An example of this the "face on mars".

Definition: Emotions are a very powerful thing. They can make us believe in something even if it doesn't make sense. They obscure our judgement and make us want to believe.
Connection: "Psychics" use this reason for belief to their full advantage. Most claim they can contact the deceased, and of course people believe them their emotion towards their deceased loved one makes them want to believe. Here is one psychic that was proved wrong, and broke a mother's heart.
