The Humanity Star was a big achievement for such a small nation like New Zealand. Interestingly, the Star was viewed by many people as a waste of time and money as many of them thought that it was just a ball of space junk. This paragraph represents that the Humanity Star was a success, as it met the reason it was sent up into space. The 1m in diameter sphere was designed and created to send of flares of light which could be seen by the naked eye. This was meant to make the people on Earth think about how small we are and what we are doing to our precious world we live in. The Stars launch was a success but only after 3 months of being in space it had burned up and fallen back to earth. This event got people thinking about the environment of space and what we are doing to earth.

Being the 11th out 196 countries to launch a rocket into the outer atmosphere, that makes the humanity star it rewarding to see beams of light shining over our country. People may have been criticising the ball and complaining on how it is space junk but, they have missed the fact that we indeed are the 11th country to launch a rocket into space. Whilst many countries were focusing their money and engineers, rocket lab at the base in the mahia peninsula was creating a staple for New Zealand, being one of the first to launch a rocket into space.

The Rocket Labs Humanity Stars main goal was to create conversation and make people think about how our world is so fragile in the universe. The Humanity Star is a Geodesic sphere made from carbon fibre with 76 highly reflective panels. This paragraph will show that the Humanity Star didn’t achieve it’s goal but it could have if they displayed it better. Most people hardly knew about it and not a lot of people would go outside and stare at the sky expecting something to fly past. Beautiful, decorative, shining - the Humanity Star was not known to many people in the world or NZ. As beautiful as it was the Star was not advertised enough letting down the purpose of us looking to the sky and spark conversations in our head about our fragile, tiny world.

In late January 2018, a New Zealand-based rocket and spacecraft launching company by the name of Rocket Lab, launched a Geodesic sphere-shaped satellite into Earth’s atmosphere called the ‘Humanity Star.’ This paragraph will demonstrate how the Humanity Star was. First of all, the Humanity Star was invented by Rocket Lab as a satellite to test the health of the Environment. Peter Beck (founder and CEO of Rocket Lab) said at an interview regarding the Humanity Star, “The Humanity Star was invented to get people to look up and think about the environment of our fragile Earth, and our fragile place in the Universe.” Now, I get what Rocket Lab are meaning to say, but do we really need another piece of space junk floating around our Earth? Peter Beck also stated that the Humanity Star was launched into orbit to spark conversation about the challenges humans are facing, and many people (including MP’s, astronomers, etc.) took to social media to discuss how the satellite was just blocking people on Earth from observing the real beauty of outer space. While some people who didn’t think the Humanity Star was a practical object to be orbiting Earth, some commended Rocket Lab and Peter Beck, as they saw the satellite to be a symbolic sign of. This paragraph showed that, in my point of perspective, the Humanity Star had fulfilled its purpose of what the Founder of Rocket Lab wanted, though is not very practical for its true job that was orbiting Earth.

By Karearea Bowden-McClutchie

Although weather reports become more advanced with new technology, global warming effects the weather and it becomes less predictable. This means Rocket Lab can send images of the hazards to the civil defence force to send a notification to towns and cities to tell them to get away from raging storms, take another route to save time from blocked roads, and furthermore warm civilians to get away from the beach and up on a high point

Images taken frequently can help scientists find weather patterns how and where tsunamis frequently form, and build up areas from flooding. After research has taken place, scientists can then forward information to Hazard Management. Safety of the public is crucial, so prior research can save countless lives.

Rocket Lab - Research Report

Introduction

This report will argue that Rocket Lab, in collaboration with NASA can send their own satellite imagery, taken from space to warn many communities about hazards heading their way, help the environment with pollution, and improve agricultural technology.

Methodology

All of the information provided on this report is gathered through research on many News Articles and Websites on the internet to discuss more about the 3 issues I have chosen. These sites will be listed in a bibliography at the bottom of this report.

First key finding - discussion Hazard Management

Hazard management, meaning the control over certain environmental hazards or more so, natural disasters. Rocket Lab currently in collaboration with NASA can take numerous images of eroding cliffs, advancing storms and speeding tsunamis all from outer space. This allows Rocket Lab to identify hazards and warn the nearby civil defence force to alert civilians to get to higher grounds, take another route around a blocked road, and evacuate away from a storm. If for some reason TVNZ 1 News broadcasted some incorrect detail in their weather report, Rocket Lab can send an Image of the missed details to quickly warn the channel to show the added images.

Global warming is becoming a major issue in many eyes of the world. It makes our weather more unpredictable and more abrupt than ever. Our answer lies in Rocket Lab

Second key finding - discussion - Agricultural Technology

Managing crops can be a struggle for many farmers, global warming causes plants to lose more water. Numerous satellite images are taken from space of our own New Zealand rural areas to detect dry soil. These can then alert farmers around Aotearoa to increase the amount of water and or fertilizer needed to nourish that soil to help restore the ground that we live on. Flooding is another problem, caused by lots and lots of rainfall. The flood that had recently happened in Rotorua blocking many roads for 8 days causing trouble around the community. Rocket Lab and NASA can easily fix this by sending numerous images of grey clouds ready to rain down on to town folks. This can warn more citizens to prepare for the worst.

Should a drought suddenly appear, then Rocket Lab could again use their images to show where in the New Zealand the drought is and how bad it would get if it were unattended. They can also do this with more cases like using thermal cameras to detect the amount of methane gas in the atmosphere or how much moisture in the soil. This can help farmers to decrease the amount of cows being farmed or help farmers get their all of their cows, sheep etc to shelter or prepare to supply more water during droughts. These pictures will provide much help to many farmers around New Zealand.

Third key finding - discussion - Help the Environment

RocketLab and NASA, with their own satellites can again take images of New Zealand and it’s changes over time. They have sparked interest in other people from many other space companies who have booked their own space to board Nasa’s rockets. These are those following companies who are or most likely to be interested, Planet Labs, Spire Global, Moon Express and many more. If everyone joins together then Rocket Lab can help the environment all around the whole of New Zealand.

With Rocket Lab forming an alliance with other space companies we can have multiple satellites constantly taking photos of the New Zealand every hour, looking into the earth's ground and tell us if there isn't enough moisture in our soil around New Zealand.

Deforestation is another problem, taking native trees away and planting trees that are new to Aotearoa, this can deeply affect the soil and the of quality of the area. Furthermore all the other space companies can use their own technology to help New Zealand or even the world, in many ways. Using this technology, they can help find solutions to the problems that occur during events like pollution.

Pollution is becoming a massive problem in the world, it is estimated that the majority of rubbish being dumped in our world ends up in the ocean. Real time images can help to inform and isolate certain places filled with rubbish to warn the government to make a move and even create a community group.

Conclusion

This report has proven that Rocket Lab working with NASA can prevent many injuries, save plenty of time for using their own satellite images. Ranging from hazard management to improving agricultural technology. RocketLab can truly help the world with its many problems like pollution, droughts, storms, illegal fishing, climate change, with it being in collaboration with NASA it could quite easily solve a lot of these problems to set a pathway to a clean perfect for our future generations of scientists. This pair could be the most environmentally helpful companies in the world.

Reference List

NewsPaper Articles:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10872125

Websites:

https://www.rocketlabusa.com/news/updates

https://www.nasa.gov/topics/benefits/index.html

https://www.stats.govt.nz/topics/agriculture

https://www.newzealandnow.govt.nz/live-in-new-zealand/safety/natural-disasters

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=1204p1605

Rocket Lab - Research Report

Introduction

This report will discuss three problems with Earth Rocket Lab working with NASA are trying to resolve. This report will go into detail about ways Rocket Lab are working on to restore Earth to its graceful beauty. The problems that will be argued in this report are, in one’s opinion, the most critical in today’s society, and this report will also discuss the ways Rocket Lab are working on to fix.

Methodology

This report is based on research found online, using radio articles, News articles and Internet websites, such as Rocket Lab’s and NASA’s websites, to investigate further the problems Rocket Lab are working on to recondition.

First key finding

Rocket Lab collaborating with NASA, are creating satellite technology that can save New Zealand’s up and coming environmental problems. Rocket Lab can take photos from space, then feed information, including real-time satellite images, back to Rocket Lab’s headquarters around New Zealand. This information can outline New Zealand’s changing environment, and can track and record all of the changes that are taking place in our environment.

For example, these satellites can record population patterns, and population-dense areas. Jim Hefkey, director of the Auckland Programme for space systems says, “such information could help solve poverty and pollution, reducing the fear that people would eventually have to move planets”. Also Peter Beck, founder of Rocket Lab told media “This is where life is generally going to get better. This is the planet we have got and we have got to do our best to save it”.

Second key finding

Rocket Lab, working together with NASA, are producing Agri-technology to help with the Environment. Rocket Lab can take real-time images of forestry with various satellites orbiting around New Zealand. These images can detect any anomalies surrounding the areas, like deforestation or poaching. Scientists can then notify the Department Of Conservation (DOC) to intervene. With satellite images taken, forests and animals will be able to thrive, without concern that anything could happen.

Another example of Agri-technology taking place to help is farming. Real-time images taken from satellites can include patterns of drought, flooding, etc., and inform farmers in advance of the problem and a solution for that problem. Livestock, machinery, equipment, and fields can be saved if given enough warning.

Third key finding

Rocket Lab, in collaboration with NASA, are currently working together to make life better on Earth. The two organisations can relay images from various orbiting satellites to Rocket Lab headquarters around the world. These images can include severe storms, flash flooding, droughts, forest fires, and tsunamis, etc.. Images taken frequently can help scientists find weather patterns how and where tsunamis frequently form, and build up areas from flooding. After research has taken place, scientists can then forward information to Hazard Management.

Coastal erosion also comes under Hazard Management. Rocket Lab’s satellites can take real-time photographs of coasts with buildings near cliffs. Then Hazard management can be notified to corndon the buildings that need assistance. Safety of the public is crucial, so prior research can save countless lives. Farms, cities and people can be saved, and it can all happen starting with Rocket Lab.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this report has demonstrated how Rocket Lab, in collaboration with NASA, are working to help with environmental problems planet Earth has come across. There are many more environmental problems Rocket Lab are working to find a solution for, though this report demonstrated the top three. Whether it be helping to warn citizens of a natural disaster, or to help farmers upgrade their agri-technology, Rocket Lab working with NASA are benefiting the environment for future generations to come. Together, with a bit of help, we can all work together to make life better on Earth.

Reference List

News Articles

Rocket Lab looks at life on Earth - www.pressreader.com

https://www.pressreader.com/new-zealand/the-press/20180123/281771334611605

Rocket Lab will make life on earth better, no need to move to Mars - www.stuff.co.nz

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/100766610/rocket-lab-will-make-life-on-earth-better-no-need-to-move-to-mars

Radio Articles

Rocket Lab chief commits to protect environment - www.radionz.co.nz

https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/regional/277760/rocket-lab-chief-commits-to-protect-environment

Websites

NASA website

https://www.nasa.gov/

Rocket Lab website

https://www.rocketlabusa.com/

Photos

Introduction

https://www.rocketlabusa.com/

First Key Finding

https://steemit.com/space/@showmovie/satellite-reflection-launched-into-orbit

Second Key Finding

http://www.royalgazette.com/re-insurance/article/20180213/partnerre-signs-deal-with-agritech-firm

Third Key Finding

https://medium.com/future-crunch/natural-disasters-arent-what-they-used-to-be-b30e1d4c9c31

Conclusion

http://clipartstockphotos.com/free-stock-photos/88869/earth-and-people-clipart

Jim Hefkey, director of the Auckland Programme for space systems says, “such information could help solve poverty and pollution, reducing the fear that people would eventually have to move planets”. For example Peter Beck, founder of @RocketLab said “ This is where life is generally going to get better. If there was a drought for example, RocketLab could use the images to tell people how much water to supply depending on how long lasting. They can also show where and when the drought will stop. They can do this with storms and other natural disasters happening around New Zealand farms. This can all help farmers get their livestock to safe places or prepare for droughts by saving water and moving their cows to a more watered area, that won’t be as affected by the drought or storms. This will all be extremely helpful method for farmers around the country.

Conclusion

If RocketLab and NASA continue to collaborate with each other, they can help with all of these topics written above.

Rocket Lab - Research Report

Introduction

This report will discuss how Rocket Lab working with N.A.S.A can use satellite imagery to help the citizens of New Zealand with the environment. It will describe 3 things that Rocket Lab can do to help New Zealanders. This includes hazard management, helping the environment and improving agri - technology and how these can help the citizens of New Zealand

Methodology

This report was based on research that was conducted online using Rocket Labs and NASA websites, News articles and journals that could help investigate how Rocket Lab can help with the New Zealand environment.

First key finding - discussion

Hazard Management

Rocket Lab and NASA can help with hazard management by using real-time satellite images taken from space. These images can help save a lot of lives by seeing where and how bad storms, tsunamis or any natural disasters can get. Rocket Lab can warn the New Zealand Government which then can warn civilians about the disasters and where to go to stay safe. Rocket Lab can also notice cliff erosion within Aotearoa and help alert citizens to move. The top viewed channels in New Zealand are TVNZ 1 and 3 which can be used to warn New Zealand civilians of dangers in or near their towns.
Without Rocket Lab and NASA we would normally only get 2 to 3 days to prepare for natural disasters. This is hardly enough time to prepare but now with the help of Rocket Lab we now have up to a week or more to prepare for storms and we also know where it is heading.

Second key finding - discussion

Help the Environment

New Zealand’s environment is one of the most beautiful things about the country. With a large variety of native plants and animals, this makes the environment very important to New Zealanders. Rocket Lab can help care for the NZ environment by using their satellites to take photographs of the country. These photos can help show droughts, erosion, deforestation and natural disasters. The satellites can show heat changes and how much water is in the soil to let Rocket Lab know if there are any droughts. They can notice river banks being eroded with the photos by seeing changes in every photo and then try to stop the erosion by putting in plants or vegetation on the banks. Using the satellite images Rocket Lab can see forest sizes decreasing and then figure out ways to stop it and replant the trees. This is how Rocket Lab can help care for the New Zealand environment.

Third key finding - discussion

Improve Agri - Technology

How can Rocket Lab help improve Agri - Technology throughout New Zealand? Interestingly, Rocket Lab and NASA can improve Agri - Technology in many different ways. They can alert farmers around the country about any oncoming storms or rainfall and tell them where to move there stock or what else they can do. The soil in the ground can dry up easily in hot weather and with the satellites, Rocket Lab can help notice the change of moisture within the soil of paddocks. They can inform farmers so that they can add fertiliser to their paddocks and also give farmers better information on what paddocks to put their cows in. This can impact the amount of milk produced by farmers and the quality of the milk. Also, it can affect the health of the stock and keep their paddocks beautiful and moist. This is the future for farmers.

Conclusion

This essay has demonstrated that Rocket Lab ( with the help of NASA ) is extremely helpful in many ways to help the citizens of New Zealand. From hazard management to improving the way we farm and helping the environment. Before all of this whenever a storm or natural disaster was coming near the country to strike, the people of New Zealand only knew when it was a couple of days away. This isn’t a lot of time to prepare for a storm or natural disaster. But, with the help of Rocket Lab and NASA, we can now figure out 1 or more weeks before it came across us, which is plenty of time to prepare. Rocket Lab and NASA have helped the citizens of New Zealand in so many ways and made it a better place to be.

Reference list

Newspaper Articles

Rocket Labs Mahia - Launched Satellites will help Regional Development. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12097704

Rocket Lab will make life on Earth Better, no Need to Move to Mars! https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/100766610/rocket-lab-will-make-life-on-earth-better-no-need-to-move-to-mars

Science Article

Soil Quality Information.

https://extension.psu.edu/soil-quality-information

Rocket Lab Website

Space is Open for Business!

https://www.rocketlabusa.com/
