    성의 둘레는 1,962m, 높이 0.5~3m이며, 넓이는 103,647㎡이다. 삼한시대에 건립되었으나 고려 말기에서 조선 초기 사이에 수축(修築)한 것으로 알려져 있다.

    1592년(선조 25) 임진왜란 때 동래부사 송상현(宋象賢)을 위시해 군·관민이 함께 장렬한 전투를 벌였던 최대의 격전지이기도 하다. 임진왜란 이후 방치되어 있던 것을 1731년(영조 7) 동래부사 정언섭(鄭彦燮)이 이전보다 훨씬 큰 규모로 성을 쌓았는데, 이 성이 현재 그 흔적으로 남아 있는 읍성의 기원이다.

    읍성에는 동·서·남문과 암문(暗門)의 4개 문이 있고 각 문에는 문루(門樓)가 있었는데, 동문을 지희루(志喜樓), 서문을 심성루(心成樓), 남문을 무우루(無憂樓), 암문을 은일루(隱一樓)라 하였다. 중요한 문루였던 남문에는 익성(翼城)을 두었고 나머지 3개 문에도 옹성을 설치하여 외적의 침입에 대비하였다.
