The stimulus we chose to use this week was about falling, in a metaphorical sense. We chose to write a soft acoustic ballad around previously written lyrics. The instruments we used to do this were the keyboard, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, flute and vocals.

The song developed mainly through the lyrics, which had previously been written by Jess so we decided to use them. From this, we decided the song should be mainly acoustic with the keyboard and flute coming in and out of the song.

Another of the song's developments was the structure, in which we established this through texture by having only the bass and guitar play a bridge, but having all the instruments playing together in the verse. The keyboard also later changed between broken and block chords.

The performance

Firstly, the song opens with the acoustic guitar playing solo for two bars with the bass guitar playing legato of the root notes. Then, in the first verse the rest of the instruments come in, with the keyboard playing broken chords. As the chorus comes in, all the instruments are still playing but the keyboard is now playing the block chords strummed on the guitar. However a tambourine is also now introduced to play at the half of each bar. This then goes back into the second verse, and the chorus again. Here is where the bridge comes in, and the guitar is letting the chords ring out as the tambourine plays once in each bar throughout. When the bridge is repeated a second time, a second layer off vocals are added over the first to add texture and build the song back up into the chorus. In the last bar of the bridge, the keyboard, bass guitar and flute are reintroduced to lead back into the chorus. Here, the vocals are more powerful in order to add some differentiation before the song ends. We end on the notes ringing out.

Before performing, we say that our song is a slow ballad about falling and having to pick yourself back up in the metaphorical sense. I think we accurately portrayed this through the lyrics, and made them the main focus through the use of softer played instruments in our piece. I feel that the genre we used suited the lyrics well, and the acoustic guitar and keyboard paired together were a very good fit with the bass used to add a deeper tone.

After viewing our performance, our class only said to extend the use of rhythm in the song to improve.

I think that one of my own strengths was having to perform as the whole rhythm section with two instruments. This being playing the bass, and also having a tambourine around my ankle so I could play this in the chorus as well as the bass and in the bridge.

Something I could improve on would be practice, as I hit a wrong note in the performance but I'm unsure if it was entirely noticeable as I wasn't the focus of the song.

All in all, I think that our stimulus was creative and was portrayed well through the lyrics, and our song was a success as an acoustic/keyboard ballad.
