Culturally responsive teaching is the idea of incorporating a student's own culture references into all of their aspects of learning. I understand the concept of culturally responsive teaching, however I do have a question about it. How would I be able to incorporate a student's own culture into their learning? Almost all of my future students will have different cultural references that pertain to their learning, so how could I include more culturally responsive teaching without feeling like I would be excluding other student's cultural references? However, if incorporated correctly, I feel that my students and I would both benefit with more efficient teaching and learning.
AE

Culturally responsive teaching is when a teacher is fully aware of all the cultures represented in their classroom. With this information they consciously remember to incorporate each culture into a lesson, so that all students are treated equally. Doing this also allows the students to find the material relatable, therefore enhancing their learning experience. The information will then become more memorable. One thing I would like to know about this topic is how to incorporate cultures in unique ways. Rather than the ways one might expect to teach about a culture, I want to know about more out-of-the-box activities.
-Becky Chertow

Culturally responsive teaching is a teaching strategy that includes students' cultural references in all aspects of learning. To teach with this technique, it is required that the teacher has full understanding of his/her students' cultures. By teaching with this technique, the teacher will be delivering lessons that appeal to students with diverse backgrounds. I feel that culturally responsive teaching is a very important component within the classroom because it creates a positive classroom environment that promotes diversity. Within my own future classroom, I hope that I will be able to teach with a culturally responsive mindset. To do this, I can possibly include activities that allow my students to share their own thoughts, giving my students the opportunities to learn from each other by having them work in groups, or by referencing different cultures and ideas within my teaching to integrate world ideas.

- MB

Culturally responsive teaching is very important, especially with students of a younger age. Not everyone grows up the same and students are going to have different religions, families, traditions, beliefs, and overall cultures. It is important to be aware of the different cultures in the classroom and to be aware to not exclude any student in a discussion. Especially with popular holidays such as Christmas and Easter, it is important to remember that not all school districts are lenient with students missing school to celebrate their appropriate holidays. I think it is important for teachers to be respectful and assist their students in those scenarios. At the start of each school year, I want my students and their families to fill out a paper explaining their culture or beliefs so that I am aware of the variety of cultures in the classroom. I am curious about how I should approach the popular holidays in the classroom. I know to not only teach/talk about one culture but would it be appropriate to talk about a few holidays such as Christmas or Hanukkah as long as I recognize and mention that not everyone celebrates the same holiday and it is important to respect the difference in beliefs. I would hate to not mention any holidays at all. Overall I want to teach my students about the variety of cultures we have in our classroom as well as teach them to be respectful of others and their cultures.
-MH

Culturally responsive teaching can (and should) take many forms – from recognizing the differences between and within various cultures to actively learning about cultures and communities other than one’s own. In the classroom, cultural responsiveness is a critical part of ensuring that all students not only feel accepted and successful, but truly are. Cultural responsiveness requires teachers to recognize the diversity within their schools and classrooms, and that no matter how predominant the “majority” culture or values, there are always others represented within the student body. Too often, the dominant culture is assumed to be the “norm” and is reflected in the curriculum, standards, and rules, serving as a disincentive and de-motivator for students who have a different culture or values. A culturally responsive teacher will share information and utilize curriculum that is inclusive, featuring the stories, viewpoints, contributions, and important figures from a variety of backgrounds. That, in turn, will help to engage students from diverse cultures and broaden the perspective of those from the “dominant” culture. A culturally responsive teacher will also go beyond the textbook to help students make connections between their experiences – and those of their families – and the material being covered in class.

In my future classroom, I hope to be able to use a variety of strategies and approaches to meet the needs of all of my students and have them feel respected and empowered. I recognize that one of the most important things I can do as a teacher is to help my students recognize and appreciate their own culture and to respect and honor the diversity of cultures around the world – and in our own country. I hope to be able to learn ways to weave that all-important lesson throughout the curriculum and my classroom activities. - EH

Culturally responsive teaching is truly one of the most important things that should be done throughout all classrooms. Teachers should be learning about and incorporating cultures of various kinds within their classroom and teaching aside from their own. In doing so this will have a major positive effect on their students and classroom environment. It is important to allow students to know that who they are is valued and important and if the teacher can be culturally responsive in a classroom of young growing minds that will help these students grow to be proud of who they are. As of right now I have been able to see different ways in which teachers are culturally responsive but I would like to know if there is anything that can be done aside from just focusing on a day, such as Martin Luther King Jr. day, and only teaching my future students a small aspect of a larger community.

D.C.

From recent students conducted to illustrate what is happening with the achievement gap with students and their learning, it has been determined that a major problem for this is the amount of cultural and language differences between students in the classroom. Culturally responsive teaching is a solution to this problem and is trying to be used as a central teaching bases for all classrooms. It has been proven that using culturally responsive teaching helps meeting the intellectual needs of all the students in the classroom allowing for equal learning opportunities and achievements. I believe this is similar to bilingual education but on a broader scope. My sister is a bilingual educator and has been for 20 years and I know two languages is hard enough. Though this is not the same, having different cultures in a classroom and meeting their individual needs is a tricky task. How would a teacher incorporate these practices into the classroom? Maybe a question and answer to know where they are from to start off with? Including all the different cultures in different lesson plans? What are the best ways to do this?

ARS

Culturally responsive teaching is important for us as teachers and for our students. First and foremost it's a learning experience for everyone when we are all being exposed to different cultures. It's important to expose our students at a young age when they are free of judgement or when their judgement can be easily influenced. We must teach our students to respect everyone's culture within the classroom and outside the classroom. A way we can do this is by teaching our students about different cultures. This also allows for students in that particular culture to feel welcomed and special. Even then that student can go up and share something they do that is specifically related to their culture. Parents can also be involved where they are speaking in their native language and they can even teach a phrase to the class. Being culturally responsive is a way to create a community within your classroom as it's not excluding anyone out. It brings comfort to those who are nervous about sharing their culture customs with everyone, but if we are culturally responsive in out classrooms there would be no need to feel that way.

BC

This strategy makes it possible for all students to receive equitable access to education. This is extremely important because multiple research findings point to the idea that students perform exponentially better when they are represented for in their classroom. It is our job to not only recognize culturally responsive teaching for what it is, but also actively implement it into our classrooms.
With that being said, one topic I'd like to discuss is how do we come up with ways to be culturally responsive in our future classrooms? I've been introduced to quite a few ideas, but I'm very interested on the concept of constantly updating and upgrading the way we teach our class. Given the state of our society today, I know this is extremely prevalent and I want to make sure I'm handling it appropriately.
-K. Bailey

Culturally responsive teaching is an approach to the classroom that allows students to explore and become knowledgeable in the cultural and ethnic communities that surround them. This approach is used to encourage students to be engaged in their learning because the subject matter is geared towards their diverse backgrounds and cultures. This exposure allows students to grow into confident, competent, and capable independent learners who are culturally responsive to their environment. For an educator to incorporate this into their classroom is important because it allows for them to emerge themselves in the community they are working with and be inclusive in their subject matter. While doing this allows an educator to getting to know their students to allows let’s them asses their own behavior and cultural mindset that will influence how they choose to present information to their students. This student focused approach gives educators a chance to encourage academic achievements and see their unique strengths that get highlighted with this modification to instruction.

As a future educator I would like to learn strategies that allow me to explore my classroom diversity in a way that shows students that my class is a judgement free zone that allows a comfortable curiosity to flourish and for discussions to arise that allows for myself and my students to be explorers in our cultures.

Culturally responsive teaching is a technique essential to any classroom. It is the ability to create a lesson or class environment that bases off on different cultures. It is an ability that every educator should be required to learn in order to know your classroom and not leave students. Also it is the ability to communicate and identify with your students and their culture. I would like to know more techniques that will help avoid different problems that come up with in the students, such as racial or religious discrimination. Also I would like to know more on how to have students be more involved in multicultural education.
DO

It means to learn and for the class to be aware of their classmates background, for example getting to know your students by having activities that involve them writing or drawing their families and favorite holiday or etc. I would like to know some techniques and guidelines on how and what to do to become a culturally responsive teacher in the futures. Also a way to become one without making the students feel singled out if they are he only one of that culture and or how not to single out certain students during cultural activities.
-L.

Culturally responsive teaching is a teaching strategy that is very important for the modern classroom. This approach in teaching is to allow communication with students to learn and to be exposed to diverse cultures, which help the students to understand different perspectives. Implementing this strategy is very important for the curriculum where every culture should have a voice in education. In addition to implementing this, it can also help the students to feel appreciated and feel more inclusive to a lesson/subject/activity. I would like to know what resources are available for teachers as to how to and how not to teach cultural diversity in a classroom, as well as how to approach students when they feel singled out.
- Jonathan L.
