You can group the students by their readiness. I would put students with a variety of levels of readiness together so the lower students are learning from the higher students and the higher students are strengthening their mastery by teaching someone else. If the student is able to teach the material to another student then their understanding and mastery will probably be pretty high.

Grouping by readiness and interests as have already been stated. Also, students could be grouped by roles that they have established over the course of the year. For instance, students who have established themselves as "illustrators" could then be drafted into groups by their established roles.
