Stage 1: Trust vs Mistrust

Erickson’s first stage of development is crucial to a child’s development. In this stage a child is bonding and forming trust with their caregiver because they aren’t able to do things for themselves. They rely on caregivers to give them all the basic needs to survive. When talking with my parents, they said the only way to console my sister in this stage was to feed her or rock her in her baby swing. She didn’t cry much as a baby, but when she did cry it took at least 30 minutes to calm her. She always resolved with trust in my parents taking good care of her when she was so dependent on them.

Stage 2: Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt

Children in Erikson’s 2nd Stage of Development are gaining more independence. They can do more on their own, and are increasing their self control. If a child is criticized, or not able to be independent they may develop a sense of shame or inadequacy. As a child my sister was given lots of independence, and potty trained herself after watching siblings go to the restroom. She fell more under the autonomy category during this stage in life because she was independent in teaching herself the basic care task.

Stage 3: Initiative vs Guilt

Children in this stage are working on play skills, social interaction becomes more frequent in your child. Make believe play becomes more evident and sticking to roles when playing. They take more independence in self care, things like restroom breaks, brushing their teeth, and washing hands. In this stage my sister struggled with lying about her self care tasks. When asked if she washed her hands after using the restroom she would lie and say she did. She would feel guilty immediately and cry, but she also just struggled to break away from playing to do these tasks. My sister in this stage struggled with guilt a lot due to lying.

Stage 4: Industry vs Inferiority

In a child’s adolescence phase a child is gaining independence in school. Children are taught specific skills and are expected to master them. These skills can have an impact on the child’s social life and can cause them to feel inferior. A child’s social life greatly impacts self esteem in this stage. When taking intiative children thrive off positive reinforcers and gain confidence. My sister in this phase thrives off reinforcers when taking intiative to do thing like homework or chores. In this stage my sister was more on the industry side of things, she saw that following directions and doing these simple tasks resulted in a better outcome from her family and teachers.

Stage 5: Identity vs Role Confusion

During this stage a child is figuring out who they are and where they belong. They are testing waters to see what fits them and feel right, but are struggling to go against social norms. They begin exploring future possibilities for themselves and are pursuing new experiences. It’s a very trying and confusing time, they go through many role changes and are fitting into what they are going to do the rest of their lives. Lots of uncomfortable and insecurities arise from this stage. My sister was very awkward during this time, and switched her whole plan for herself at least 5 times. My parents gave her lots of independence to avoid her feeling confused. My sister struggled with role confusion at the start of this stage, but moved on to identity after figuring out what she truly wanted.

Young adulthood involves a lot of putting yourself out there. By the end of this stage in a healthy way you may end up in a long term committed relationship. Exploring relationships is what this stage is all about. Being vulnerable and being intimate. People without confidence will struggle and risk falling into the isolation category. My sister currently is in the beginner stages of young adulthood. She’s started on a dating app to start finding someone to hopefully fall under the intimacy category.

During this stage your goal is to support next generations in some way. They call it middle adulthood when between the ages of 40 to 65. This stage is majorly impacted by what path you took in stage 6. During this stage we give back to society in work, in our children, or being involved in the community. Whichever you choose to give back in your community in some way is important.

The final stage of life is a reflection. How you contribute to the society in your earlier life impacts how fulfilled you feel when you hit this stage. If you don’t have that feeling of integrity then you tend to feel despair and bitterness. Depression also can come from this stage of life.
