- Include culturally and linguistically relevant texts so that students can connect to the literature used in class.

- Collaboration: students form relationships with other students to help each other.

- Build home and school connections by having students bring in home/cultural aspects that are important to them, so it becomes authentic to their learning.

The 10 ways to accelerate language development resonated with us because it chunks the content needed to target MLLs proficiency levels for ENL teachers, but it also applies to all English proficiency levels.


The classroom community is also very important. Don't limit students to only speaking English, but encourage translanguaging throughout the school through anchor charts, multilingual signs etc.


In our fieldwork experiences, we don't always see differentiation through product in groups with Newcomers. There is a lot of scaffolding and pre-teaching vocabulary. Students in high school were able to express themselves formally and informally.

    -Have students bring realia from home to share cultural traditions.

    -Students can be experts in a topic (perhaps from their home country) and present it to the class.

    -Make sure students feel like they have a voice in the classroom. Every voice counts.

    -Build strong relationships between teacher/student so students feel safe, valued, and welcomed.

    -Reconnect with your students throughout the year.

  • 10 ways to accelerate language development

    • formal, informal discussion, mastery of various projects, youtube clips, tiktoks -> important because it allows them to be interested/engaged in learning

    • recognized the multicultural background, need to recognize their ELL are not diverse, unique, varies in strength, skills. Activities that help students discover themselves can benefit teachers in understanding their students. Ryan -> cooking activities, always bring their culture into it

    • idioms, forget that they exist and are difficult for students to understand, need to be mindful of them and teaching them.

  • Classroom Community

    • encourage translanguaging, not something commonly seen but interesting concept that can allow students to feel safe speaking their home languages. Ryan -> seen translanguaging in social situations at his previous workplace. Realizes that language is universal, reorientates the ease of communication. Eliseo -> tried translanguaging in classroom, translanguaging is intuitive. Teachers using students' home language -> helps bridge that connection with the students
