This footage is used specifically because it portrays her as a genuine artist whose motives for making music is not for fame or to be in the limelight, the press, or on TV etc - she makes music for nobody but herself.

There is no non-diegetic sound, no introduction, and the footage is giving the audience a feel of what type of person she is sans distraction. When this is mentioned, there is mediation used in the form of complementary imagery - compilation footage of her shouting and swearing at a crowd of people, and images of her with low-key lighting are used as the vindication of their claims.

This is done to show that there is a darker side to the artist and that during her short career, she was the subject of misfortune and instability, which ultimately led to her death. In terms of mise en scene, all are in rooms with low-key lighting, and this adds to the negative 'tragedy' theme of the documentary, almost as if the documentary is mourning her. It also helps the audience to focus on what the interviewees are saying, rather than being distracted by things in the background. 

The inclusion of talking heads footage in the documentary meant that the audience could connect to different people in the documentary, and it makes the documentary seem more rounded and complete, as they are receiving the opinions and perspectives from several different people. This is done to let the audience know who is talking, while also giving the words more meaning through demonstration. As another example, one of the talking heads described Amy as 'completely an original' and at that point, compilation footage of the camera scanning Amy from the bottom to the top was shown (ped up). The visuals create a 'ghost-like' effect which I think are used again to represent mourning and loss, and the black background emphasises this.
