I really appreciated this chapter as it really connected with me. When I was in my early twenties, I really got into these books that had all kinds of lateral thinking puzzles. Although, in the beginning when I started reading them, I often could not come up with the answers on my own and had to look for the answers in the back of the book. The more I kept reading them...the more I realized that I really needed to learn to think another way. The more I tried…..the better I got at thinking outside the box...of utilizing another part of my mind...of thinking laterally. I figured I would share one of these lateral thinking puzzles. Good luck! Email me if you want the answer! Dyann Simone

Which Switch?

You have just purchased a giant mansion with a wine cellar in the basement. On the main floor, next to the staircase, are 3 light switches that control light bulbs in different parts of the house. You would like to know which one turns on the light in the wine cellar.

How can you determine which light switch is wired to the wine cellar by making a SINGLE trip to the basement? Note that this is not a trick question. You are alone in the house, the wiring is hidden behind the wall, and the rooms controlled by the three switches are not visible from where you are standing.

The solution is strictly in the manipulation of the light switches. You can do whatever you like with the switches, but once you go down into the wine cellar you need to know for sure which of the three switches is for the wine cellar.

Creativity sparks learning...we learn by trial and error...not just the arts and music but also writing...how many times have we rewritten essays or edited papers to have the best possible submission. Creativity has inspired scientists to find cures for illness, going to space, building outstanding architectural designs etc. Again our students need to be exposed to art, music, field trips to museums, just seeing different cities etc. to spark their curiosity. Not everything can be learned in books. They need to step out of the box and see the world or we can bring the world to them at times through technology. C.G.

In my experience, the elementary students are lacking the creativity they used to have due to the technology increase. Children are growing up too quickly(lacking imagination)due to parental influences, living environment and television. Children need to be children and be prompted in school to use their minds in creative ways not only by use of computers but also on paper and 3D construction activities. All of these activities help develop the minds of today to become more inventive across the board in STEAM.

I believe creativity is dying in many areas of children's lives, whether it be in school or in the home. Students don't want to take the time for creativity's "process" to take place. Students live in a very instant gratification world and don't feel the need to fight or work for something. Creativity does not always come easy but takes wrestling with ideas and thoughts to bring them out in different ways. The more students take the time to explore themselves and really look inside, the more creativity will with flourish from within them.

Creativity sparks interest, interest sparks curiosity, curiosity sparks questioning, questions sparks answer seeking and answer seeking sparks learning. Learning sparks success. Success is the SPARK. (That was real deep for me.)I believe at times creativity is needed to spark interest. Creativity is not just limited to projects with markers, paper and scissors. Although, at times it does include the above materials. But those materials are not always in the budget. So if we continue to think that there is no box, we can let our creativity ride and the rest will follow. If we, we the educators, can spark interest of our students, the opportunities are endless and hopefully they will take the process towards other things they are interested in--- or not so interested in. I believe it is not the content of what we teach that is so important (hear me out before you get your underwear in a knot) it is the process of how they they utilize prior knowledge, their thought process as well as their way of finding a solution/ answer to questions and problems. We need to supply them with a toolbox of ways to be better versions of themselves. This way they will be an asset to their community, household and profession. On a personal note, I allow my daughter at her tender age of 4 to just figure it out. I'll ask her to do something and by herself she figures out a way to get it done. Sometimes it is not how I would have done it but I praise her at using her creativity, problem solving skills and prior knowledge to get a task done. Sometimes I'll ask her what she is doing and she says, "You'll see." Which tells me she is confident in what she is doing and knows that she is going to succeed. That is what we want for our students. We want them to be confident within themselves. Creativity ignites success!

An article that appeared in Time last year discussed "How thinking like a kid can spur creativity": http://time.com/4529444/how-thinking-like-a-kid-can-spur-creativity/. The author argues that fear of judgment often prevents "us from looking at the world like a child might, as a place of wonder and new possibilities." Freeing ourselves the voice of our internal critic will enable us to embrace our creativity -- and perhaps make us more ready to embrace and celebrate that of our students.
