As a classroom teacher I have often gone above and beyond to provide for my students only to find that there are others out there who would love to have the opportunity to help.   We, educators, leave so much of our community resources untapped because we just don't know they exist.  Our local communities are invested in providing the best for students, we just have to let them know what we need.
A call to city hall, the local library or grocery store can get you more than you realized, a talk with your neighbor who is a member of a local service club can yield opportunities for students to share their work out side the school walls.  What are the untapped local goldmines that can provide in kind support to enrich learning for all?

There seems to be a distrust of the educational system on the whole, but a love for individual schools and teachers. How does this play into the narrative needed to pull outsiders onto the side of schools? What can we as leaders leverage in order to build trust in public education as a change agent in society? I suppose it needs to start on the micro level. The local NBC affiliate has partnered with one of the community's largest employers to highlight the excellence of individuals nominated by the community with the Crystal Apple Award. Not only does this shine the light on excellent teachers, but brings in the voice of the site or district leadership into local homes on a daily basis.  The CBS affiliate also partners with a local bank to fund a teacher a month based on  a personal request and classroom need.  These visible signs of community support for education are a small piece of what could be possible when the community and the local education system focus on the needs of the students.
