Senobio, Ginalyn N.
3rd Year-3EDSST5A
1. How India maintain their sense of Nationalism despite of the presence of the European in their Nation?
The first spark of resistance in India were started at the year 1857. The uprising was consist of Hindu and Muslim soldiers or sepoys. They rebelled against the oppressive rule of East India Company. Many sepoys got offended to use rifle because some part of it was made of animals which said to be probihited in sepoys religion. But this rebellion was put down by British Army. However, India maintained their sense of nationalism when British introduced education. It enlightened them to the ideas of nationalism which lighted the flame to desire freedom. British destroyed textile industries and imposed discriminatory policies. High positions in government were only for British people because they believed that Indians were responsible of disorder in their society. This led to the formation of Indian National Congress. Indian rulers were able to recognized the divide and rule strategy of Britain when British about to divide Bengal. Though British succeeded in dividing Bengal, leaders in Bengal urged its people to banned British products and prioritize Indian products. Moreover, several protest occurred. Later, India gained their independence in 1947 spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi.

2. Explain briefly the strategy of the European (Great Britain) with their plan of conquering India.

Economic manipulation has been the first step of Great Britain in conquering India. They established trading posts in India and behaved as merchants under Mughal empire. But when Mughal empire collapsed, many strong regional power arose and constantly fought each other. British began to show their true colors and took advantage of the situation by making allies in some prince of India. They defeated french and slowly gaining control over India. When East India Company expanded, they defeated major Indian regions. To further strengthened their grip to India, they adopted the "divide and conquer" policy. For instance, the anglo-series series of wars. British used it's alliance to some indian powers like Maratha to defeat Mysore kingdom. Another example was the transition to British Raj government, dividing indian regions and allowing only their allied indian rulers to manage the land. British even separated Muslims and Hindus in local elections. This is to prevent Indian people from planning rebellion towards British government. The quarrel between these two was still evident until now, because even India gains it freedom, Muslim and Hindus are still not in good terms. This even resulted to partition of India where Pakistan recognized as sovereign country in August 1947, separated from India.

Upon knowing the terrifying history of India, I remember one of the political ideologies taught by our professor in politics. The Machiavellianism, according to Machiavelli, the prince must be wise enough to discern any trap that might lead them in subjugation of outside or internal forces. This means to be careful not just with your enemy, but to your friends also. Because at the Indian history, betrayal has become an entry point of British to conquer India.

3. In the video Triumph of Imperialism it was discuss how Imperialist country won in conquering Asia: Can you please explain it according to your own view of understanding?

The triumph behind Western imperialism was due to their expertness in producing industrial products. Western powers were able to dominate Asian countries because of their advance technology, weapons and strong political organizations. They easily conquered less advanced countries because of their advantage in military forces and warships. Thus after defeating one country, they'll always divide and share it with their neighboring countries. This is known as the divide and rule strategy. For example, the sphere of influence in China and dividing of Middle east after world war 1.

Also, they started by asking permission on the Mughal of India to have British security guard to protect their trade and later on it became British army that makes them more powerful. The Great Britain conquered India by being cunning and for having a smart military strategies. This strategies make the Britain won in conquering India.

Name: Santos, Jomalee Luchie C.
Year and Section: Third year-3EDSST5A

1. How India maintain their sense of Nationalism despite of the presence of the European in their Nation?

-One of the earliest civilization of the

world was established in India way back thousand of years. The prosperous growth of india persisted for centuries and it has been united by numerous leaders and empires. However in 7th century CE, Arab Muslim attacked the country, and after a while european countries became entangled to the state affairs. Eventually western nations took control in India subcontinent by conquering the lands. In 1858 Several indian rulers and leaders joined together with the goal to revolt towards the West, the Sepoy Mutiny is one of the well known rebellion throughout the history yet it did not succeed, thus we could clearly see that even Britain colonize the subcontinent, still Indian people strive to win back their country. The religious sense of India is one of the key component why they have strong national consciousness and the intervention in their economy by destroying the textile industry, prohibiting them to make manufacture their own salt and draining their national resources, in addition they are often enraged by the British colonial officials conservative policies as well as racial prejudice. Afterwards, they established the Indian National Congress along with attempt to gain a stronger control in government for educated Indians and to establish a framework for civil and political discourse between Indian and British. In 1930, a Hindu Lawyer named Mohandas Gandhi lead a non violent resistance towards Western rule with his thousands of followers by picking salt in the sand.

2. Explain briefly the strategy of the European (Great Britain) with their plan of conquering India.

-Great Britain colonial rule to India began when several British merchants founded the East India Company. Since trading between India has been greatly hailed through ancient periods by Europeans, Indians have taken this opportunity. Indian Kings were lured by the luxurious presents and financial support offered by Western to them. As such they allowed the british to store the merchandise and created several warehouses, as well as giving them a freedom to construct shipping ports. Furthermore they even give British a permission to established their own army, which initially meant to protect the company, but eventually it exploited towards offensive motives. In order to invade a country it was said that you must first target their coastal barriers thats why having several sea port inside Indian lands was a great advantage of British empire. The East India company changed drastically from being a mere trading company to an organization which governed a vast area and eventually they conquered the sub continent regions of India one by one.

3. In the video Triumph of Imperialism it was discuss how Imperialist country won in conquering Asia: Can you please explain it according to your own view of understanding?

-Western always wanted to expand their territories to the east aiming to spread Christianity and find species. However when Industrial Revolution began, Europeans began to see Asia as a sources of industrial material and viewpoint as market for western manufactured products. In my perception, Western easily conquered Asia because of their tricky tactics, they tend to engage with established sovereign nations, Instead of seeking to gain absolute control of vast region. Western also take opportunity of certain countries weakness to invade asia, like the collapsing of political power of a nation. In instance in India, British colonial empire used the decline of Mughal Empire as an advantage. Establishing a great power to the weak countries of Asia, accompanied by a handful of strong army with advance firearms technology, while dominating their economy, It then became facile to western to obtain Asian countries and spread their influence.

How India maintain their sense of Nationalism despite of the presence of the European in their Nation?

Indian nationalism developed as a concept during the Indian independence movement which campaigned for independence from British rule. The Indian Independence Movement was a series of historic events with the ultimate aim of ending the British rule in India. Indian nationalism is an instance of territorial nationalism, which is inclusive of all of the people of India, despite their diverse ethnic, linguistic and religious backgrounds.

2. Explain briefly the strategy of the European (Great Britain) with their plan of conquering India.

During around 1600 British East India Company arose and they built companies, businesses and factories all over India. It was created to serve as a trading body for English merchants, specifically to participate in the East Indian spice trade. As time goes by East India Company needed armies and man power to protect their businesses and agenda during that time. British provided financial support to Indian Kings in some cases for gaining the favors of Indian kings. By following this cunning strategy, East India Company gained the favor of the king of Vijayanagara Empire, An empire that ruled over South India. British East India Company sometimes used to extend their support to some of the Indian rulers in battles. British wanted every emperor to fight with each other so that they can get some advantage out of it. They started interfering in Indian Politics in the name of help. We can clearly notice the divide and rule strategy of British East India Company that time. They strengthened their armies inside India and when the time they are capable to conquer other territories they fight against kings and empires to gain absolute power and control.

3. The Age of Imperialism was fueled by the Industrial Revolution in Europe and the United States, and it profoundly influenced nation-building efforts in Japan and China. At first, In the time of Mughal Empire, India company allowed British to establish the 1st factor and they started operating as a business entity. Part of their plan, they provided support to Indian Kings for gaining the favors of India, because of the favors and support from British, India allowed Europe to rule over South India to open a new company and it follows by many companies around of India that held by Europe. Aside from that, British entering in trading even in politics in the name of help. Indians start to speak out and become more vocal to get their independence. In 1858 some Indian leaders came together and rebelled against the British east Indian Company. This is known as the Indian rebellion of 1858 or sepoy mutiny.

2. In certain instances, the British also offered financial assistance to Indian kings to win the Indian kings' favors. The East India company won the favor of the King of the Vijayanagara empire by pursuing this cunning strategy. Some of the Mughal empire's last sultans were frail and did not do any good for India. They just enjoyed their sultan 's status and were delighted with the costly gifts offered by these strangers. The company only had permission to have security guards to secure their trade at the beginning of East India. But they need to maintain a fully trained army consisting of artillery, cavalry, and infantry regiments in the mid-18th century East India company and other foreign powers persuaded Indian kings that their business and trade must be secured for that. Then East India began a game of supremacy and control. Their troops have been stationed in Bengal, Madras, and Mumbai. The essence of Nationalism in India, or Indian nationalism, was the realization that all the Indian people had a common nationality and that it was in their collective interests to resist the British rule. To put it simply a combined opposition to British rule and a desire to achieve national unity lay at the heart of Indian nationalism. The Indian leaders tried to defend and protect Indian culture against what they thought was an entry of the colonial culture into the lives of the Indian people. The consciousness of the idea of Nationalism took a long time to mature and made its presence gradually in the fields of culture, economy and politics.

Explain briefly the strategy of the European (Great Britain) with their plan of conquering India.

In 1600 and the east Indian company has just been engaged to trade basic commodities such as silk, tea, salt, opium and spices from India to Europe.

DE CHAVEZ, IRA B.

3EDSST5A

1.How India maintain their sense of Nationalism despite of the presence of the European in their Nation?

A: By giving what the British wants, war. They did not just participate in wars, but also started wars to take back British-occupied areas in India. Some are as follows: The Anglo-Mhugal War, The Three Anglo-Maratha Wars, The Three Anglo-Mysore Wars, and The Two Anglo-Sikh Wars, all of which are fought for the purpose of one empire trying to conquer another. Indians did not back down from any fight during this period of time. This makes their sense of Nationalism very evident as they did not just fight in wars to defend their territory, but did so to try to take back what is rightfully theirs, their freedom from wester conquerors.

2. Explain briefly the strategy of the European (Great Britain) with their plan of conquering India.

A: The British conquest of India was the invasion and destruction of a high civilization by a trading company [the British East India Company] utterly without scruple or principle, careless of art and greedy of gain, over-running with fire and sword a country temporarily disordered and helpless, bribing and murdering, annexing and stealing, and beginning that career of illegal and ‘legal’ plunder which has now gone on ruthlessly for one hundred and seventy-three years (Durant, 1930). Indians were deprived of education during the British conquest. Their textile industry was shut down when British troops allegedly cut the thumbs of textile makers, as Shashi Tharoor suggests. Crippling a country’s economy can lead to crippling the country itself. Then in true Western Colonizing fashion, the Brits began to exploit India once they had full grasp upon it.

3. In the video Triumph of Imperialism it was discuss how Imperialist country won in conquering Asia: Can you please explain it according to your own view of understanding?

A: The European Imperialism succeeded in Asia only because of them taking it by force. They waged wars in India, bombed China’s trading posts, forced cheap labor, got raw materials from Asian countries then manufacturing them in Europe, only to be sold back in Asia at a higher price. Their ideology of “Christianizing the whole world was our burden” was nothing but a lie in order to make thing easier in influencing the countries they are trying to occupy. Nationalism can do a lot but it can only do so much. It is not enough to fend off Western Imperialists who have more advanced weaponry and technology. It is them who wanted something from our continent by that time, but rather the opposite.

Imperial conquest and control dominated European politics for three centuries. It was emblematic of European power over the far corners of the world. Few countries remained independent and for those that did their independence was dependent upon European approval. Imperialism also feed the industrial engines of Europe, providing the raw materials for production as well as the markets for commodity exchange. On the response side, colonialism had a more profound global impact than nationalism, industrialism or militarism, for it incorporated them all and stamped them with its particular effigy. We can see that their mind and soul was focus from their land even they are separated and become servant of other countries. In first, Indian notice that if they fight by each other, British have the advantages to occupied their land but because of desire to rule over Indians they set aside it. But in the times that they occupied they British, they also fought before India become officially captured by opponent. We can also see nationalism happens because of common factors. The Indians share these common factors such as respect, language, culture, traditions, mentality, history, loyalty and territory. Thus a sense of belonging would certainly come in people. It would inevitably happen, whether you like it or not. Therefore, a feeling of unity and love would happen among national citizens. In this way, nationalism gives strength to the Indian national since they want to get free by Britain. Britain established many coastal trading posts and factories against the competition from its Dutch, Portuguese, and French Counterparts. the East India Company became the real master of Bengal. the virtual solidarity of the two parts of the government under British control was implied by the way that a similar individual acted in Bengal as the deputy Diwan for the company and as deputy Subedar for the benefit of the nawab. the dual system of administration of Bengal has a great advantage for the British; they have power without responsibility. also, the British controlled the finances of Bengal and its army directly and its administration indirectly.

3. In the video Triumph of Imperialism it was discuss how Imperialist country won in conquering Asia: Can you please explain it according to your own view of understanding?

- as we all know that, the British and other European countries are very powerful. they are using their authorities and power to control and conquer Asia. also in the military, the British have more developed and improved equipment for the military and war. they are using it to win in conquering Asia. many countries in Asia don't have any developed equipment for the military, so it is resulted in losing in fighting back the British.

How did India maintain the sense of Nationalism of the presence of the European in their nation?
-one of the things mentioned in the video was the rise of Indian nationalism, for I believe that they've had enough under the rule of the British colony so they've come into realization that they were being used for a long time, that Europeans were getting benefits from the resources they have that they were being abused and manipulated. So the fire in their heart have risen, the power of nationalism has arise and they now ready to take back of what really belongs to them, to defend their land, the land of their own and not the land of the colonizers.

2. Explain briefly the strategy of the Europeans with the plan of conquering India.
-I have observed 4 smart strategies that Great Britain did in conquering India and this includes: presenting of expensive gifts to the kings of India; Strengthening Military forces; Establish trades and business and; increasing tension between Indian Kings to caused them war. Patient is really a virtue with these step by step strategies planned by British colonies for they have started in gaining the trust of the Kings through expensive gifts in order for them be allowed in successfully establishing their business and meanwhile, they were strengthening their military forces with 90% are Sepoys or native Indians and last are they created tensions between their rivals and let have war without them getting involved.

3. In the video "triumph of Imperialism' it was discussed how imperialist countries won in conquering Asia: can you please explain it according to your own view of understanding?
-In my point of view, Europeans conquest in land of Asia is truly successful for they have expanded their territory, achieved economic prosperity through trade business and also they were able to extract raw material such as rubbers, oil, and tins which they need for their business venture.

How did India maintain the sense of nationalism despite of the presence of the European in their nation?

During the British occupation of India. Indians inevitably battled the British militia to recover it's invaded areas. In fact, there were quite a few wars that the Indians fought against the British forces. These were the Anglo-Mughal war, Anglo-Maratha war, Anglo-Mysore war, Anglo-Sikh war and the Sepoy Mutiny. Indians did not simply back down from their invaders. They fight for what is rightfully theirs. They are willing to die just for the freedom of their beloved country. It definitely shows their strong sense of nationalism

2. The British taken advantage of it by supplying arms to other kings provoke more wars until empires will fall one by one caused by the damages. When all the empires fall down no one will be able to challenge the British rule.
