My favorite poem in poet X has to be "how I feel about attention" because of the familiarity and relatability of it. It speaks of the issues and rush of male attention, and the use of the Greek god, Medusa, as a metaphor to stop men in their tracks.

The story of Medusa speaks to male privilege, how men who think they are above all have the audacity to disrespect women. Its about the way Medusa can stop privliged men in their tracks by turning them into stone, and how the metaphor of being able to stop men in that way that seems unimaginable.

X wishes she had that power. If she was medusa's daughter, she'd have the genetic to keep men away from her. She'd ask Medusa for advice, and listen to whatever she told her.

After all, she's the master of controlling men at will.

“J.Cole vs Kendrick Lamar” was my favorite poem because in this Xiomara is trying to get to know a boy named Aman from her bio class by asking him if he has the new J.Cole album. I can relate to this because sometimes I ask people what music they listen to when I meet them for the first time; for me music is a way I can express myself and communicate. I also notice that Xiomara also listens to music when she is trying to calm down and get away from her problems.

I relate to this a little bit by my height, and big body. I'm always asked to play football, and if I'm strong. That has been for the most part what my life forms around, is my body.

My favorite lines in the book so far would definitely have to be the "During communion" Poem. The lines themselves really give us a sense of how Xiomara see's the world and how people are perceived in her mind. She talks about how her mothers eyes are like bright lampposts shining on her face, how she questions the religion she has taught to love since birth, and how the stained glass of la Madre María shines into colors of the rainbow. How she thinks about her moms eyes is something I can relate to because my mind also tends to exaggerate peoples features as well as my moms eyes.

My favorite poem from poet X is "Names" due to its idea of a names importance and meaning and how that defines certain parts of a persons life. This can be seen in the stanza " Mami says she thought it was a saint's name. Gave me this gift of battle and now curses, how well I live up to it." This stanza describes how despite her mothers intention with the name the only part that she can focus on is the real meaning and how she perceives it as a fitting curse for her. I think how this poem focuses on the true meaning behind a name is important as a persons name is something with unrecognizable importance but many people may just go with something that sounds pleasing or fits an idea without taking in consideration the meaning behind it.

I think my favorite poem in "Poet X" is "After". This poem is very impactful and such a good representation about how Xiomara feels. It talks about the issues and things you have to deal with by just being a woman in this world. My favorite line from this poem is "The only thing that calms me down after Twin and I get home is to put my headphones on. To listen to drake". I relate to this because music is a big part of my life and I always use it to calm down. I really like how the author uses repetition and repeats the same 3 words "It happens when". I think this makes what she is saying even more meaningful and important because of this unique way of writing it. It shows that this is a common and real thing that happens.

My favorite poem is on page 52 and is called "After", the first thing that caught my attention was the way the paragraphs are formed, how it begins with the verses attached to the left, then in the center and one that’s in the shape of a diamond. This poem talks about street harassment, how Xiomara can't get used to it and how they expect her to do so. Xiomara has experienced this throughout the whole book but in this poem she takes the time to express herself better since until now she had only said it briefly. The poem "After" is written in a way that any woman can relate to. She talks about how this happens with whatever she does, whether she looks at the ground or whether she looks forward, using shorts or pants. This speaks a lot about how street harassment happens in any situation and is not necessarily caused by the person receiving the uncomfortable and derogatory comment. Xiomara makes sure to confirm how she has done everything to not get this unnecessary attention and yet it is unavoidable.

When she says "just because your father's present doesn't mean he isn't absent" says a lot about how she feels about her dad because he's there but not emotionally.

My favorite poem from the book is "Names" Because of how its shows that names are more than just referring to someone, on how they carry deep personal values. Names carry meanings which can change someone's personality like Xiomara said that her name meant "One who is ready for war" which she took and made part of her personality. This is why I think that this poem is my favorite because of how it shows the true meaning behind a name.

The poem that really spoke to me was "After" on p.g 52-53.This poem talks about this issue that many young girls have dealt with. The issue of constantly getting unwanted attention from boys no matter what you do, say, wear, ect. I can relate to it because, like many girls in our society, I have also had many inappropriate encounters with boys. These encounters really stick with you, so I can relate to how Xiomara feels and how she uses writing to express all these angry, sad, and conflicted feelings. Writing in a journal that no one will ever see is really therapeutic because it provides a safe space for girls like Xiomara to process their emotions without fear of judgment or further harassment. It allows them to reclaim their voice. Additionally, writing can serve as a form of empowerment, helping young girls like Xiomara assert their boundaries and navigate being a teenage girl in our society.

The poet talks about being black, a woman, and beauty standards. Xiomara talks about how she watches the poet's hands and face, and it makes her feel like the poet is talking to her directly. She also explains how she connects to the poet by the poet having the same thoughts as her and that their different, but she doesn't feel different when she listens to her. Xiomara also mentions how she feels heard when she listens to her. I can relate to this poem by sometimes also feeling similar things when I watch poems/videos.

My favorite line are from the poem "Okay?", it really tells us how Xiomara feels whenever she is asked if she is okay, she talks about her feelings as if she told anyone they wouldn't fully understand how she feels. She feels conflicted about herself. She is talking to twin and they both don't understand each other but they get each other enough to be disappointed in one another and Xiomara has to keep herself in check because she can't have her guard down in this place. How I relate to this is when I would be asked if I was okay, when I was sad, I didn't know how to communicate I was feeling down so the only thing I could think to do was try to suppress them and act as if I don't have any problems. Xiomara is always seem to always put on a hard shell to protect herself but she is always conflicted about herself. I always seem to catch myself asking myself how I feel. For the "How I Feel about Attention", what I took from that is men are always trying to claim a certain part of a women and continue to disrespect them. When she said she could stop men in their tracks, she could turn them to stone and I feel like that is a good thing because she can protect and know her worth. X seems like she would be her daughter by how relatable she is because of the interactions she had with men.

She writes “When we were little, I would come home with bleeding knuckles and Mami would gasp and shake me” Muchacha, siempre peleando! Why can’t you be a lady? Or like your brother? He never fights. This poem spoke to me, I thought it was very powerful and I like how the author uses repetition and the shaping of the words. The repetition emphasizes what Xiomara is saying about constantly getting noticed and sexualized by men. Unfortunately, this is something many girls deal with, and because so many people have to deal with unwanted attention and lewd comments it has become normalized. Every girl including me, has their own story of a time when they felt unsafe, angry, scared and violated. When Xiomara wrote “I should be used to it” impacted me because it shouldn’t be something she has to get used to or tolerate. These actions from men are too often normalized when you can never get used to the feeling that your body isn't your own, the fear and anger is always still there.
