After the Shah was overthrown and exiled, there were many anti-American demonstrations held outside of the U.S. Embassy. The Shah had fled to Egypt and went to several other countries before arriving in the United States to treat his cancer. This further deepened many Iranian people's suspicion and hostility toward the United States and their ties to the Shah. The U.S. and the embassy in Iran were trying their best deal with the situation until and armed marched a siege of the embassy and took 63 Americans hostage. This was the start of the Iranian Hostage Crisis.

Mohammed Reza Shah took his father's spot on the throne on September 16, 1941. During WWII, the allied powers were concerned with his father. Reza Shah's had a friendly connection with Germany, so in 1941 they invaded Iran and occupied large areas. After occupying these areas, they saw Reza Shah as unfit to be the ruler and forced him to abdicate the throne to his son, Mohammed Reza Shah.

The Shah was overthrown the late 1970s in an event called the Iranian Revolution. Decades of economical and sociopolitical repression under the Shah had pushed people to protest against the Shah. Many people in Iran had started to support Islamic Fundamentalist, Ayatollah Khomeini, and his preaching of the Shah's evils. He led the revolution against the Shah with the people united under the cloak of Shi'i Islam. When the Shah was overthrown, Ayatollah took power and declared Iran an Islamic Republic.
