Why I chose this book

There are a lot of reasons why I chose this book. I was drawn to the cover's dark hue. I read the back and noticed the sense of mystery and questions that could only be answered by reading the book. In line with what a quote on the back of the book promised, I also really like books that are full of unpredictability. Last but not least, I chose a page in the middle of the book to spoil and decided that I liked the writing style that Hannah Jayne uses.

The beginning lines drop the reader right after the main character's (Sawyer's) boyfriend (Kevin) died. The very first page is placed at Kevin's funeral. I believe that this opening draws the reader into the sense of mystery that permeates the remainder of the book. I think this introduction is good because it does its job of drawing the reader in and giving them a taste of the book's tone.

Sawyer is constantly reminded of her relationship with Kevin in flashbacks throughout the book, mostly at the beginning. The reader gets a better sense of the current events and Sawyer's mindset thanks to the flashbacks. The reader would be lost without the flashbacks because they provide all of the context necessary to put the story's pieces together. All of the flashbacks are italicized, and they all involve a dead person, making it clear to the reader that they must be events from the past.

1) How does Sawyer's idea of who the killer is change throughout the story?
Sawyer begins by assuming that the murderer is a stranger to her. Then, she coerces herself into believing that nobody was actually killed and that the whole thing was just a prank. She then blames Heather and questions Cooper, becoming suspicious of anyone even slightly out of line. She then points the finger at Officer Haas because she believes him to be untrustworthy. Lastly, when Chloe admits to it, she is aware that it is Chloe.

2) How does the author create suspension in the story?
The author creates suspension in the story by making all of the characters have conflicting ideas about who the killer is, which alters Sawyer's opinion. Jayne also doesn't allow the reader to know the killer until the very end of the book, which makes the reader want to finish the book as soon as possible.

3) Why was the ending of the story so unexpected?
Due to the fact that the killer was Sawyer's best friend and there were no hints leading back to her, the story's conclusion came as a complete surprise. Also, Chloe injured herself to give the impression that she was attacked and was a victim. Until the very end of the book, there was no way to tell that it was Chloe.

1) In this part of the story, Sawyer's Spanish teacher, Mr. Hanson, has died from mysterious causes. The lack of knowledge about the death and another note that Sawyer later receives reinforces her theory that this is no accident, but a killer.

2) The nursery for Tara's new baby is destroyed in this section of the story; red paint is all over the walls, the curtains are ripped, etc. Sawyer and her parents no longer trust each other because they believe that Sawyer was responsible for this.

3) Maggie is the killer's third victim and the entire community is traumatized by the loss.
