Dally is the hotshot because he takes lot's of risks, like when he get's shot.
Johnny is the tragic hero because he tries to save the children and DIES.
Two-bit is the trickster because he is a smart aleck 
Randy is the peacemaker who tries to unite people and stop the fighting.

If the setting wasn't here you wouldn't have gangs and the conflict wouldn't be there."Greasers can't walk alone too much or they'll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream "Greaser!" at them...We get jumped by the Socs. I'm not sure how you spell it, but it's the abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West-side rich kids. It's like the term "greaser," which is used to class all us boys on the East Side."West and East side shows spatial inequality.
The conflict of the outsiders is the struggle between the rich and fancy socs and the dirt poor greasers with tuff hair and abusive families. "Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think it’s the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs."
