I believe that a story is more effective and important if it extends beyond the text. In this case if, if a story teaches us a lesson, this lesson can be applied to ourselves and wider world. Without a meaningful lesson or moral, a story can only be reach as far the pages it's confined within. By presented a lesson to be learned throughout the text the story extends beyond just the narrative it has created and stays with us after the story us finished. Black Swan teaches us the lesson of how we must sometimes give up what we are and what we were to become what we aspire to be. In the case of Nina, she gives up her innocence (and her life perhaps) and her youthful nature to become the black swan, growing up into a cynical individual that is aware of the cruel and uncaring nature of the world around her. This teaches us that sometimes achieving what we desire may have undesirable consequences that we are unable to reverse.

I think that it is important to learn/take away something from literature. In the Black Swan we may not all be able to relate to being a dancer but we all have something we all have goals that we are constantly striving for. The lesson may not always be direct but there is alwas a lesson that is applicable to the everyday person. i believe it's important for literature to have a message and something the audience can relate to.

Literature should not be required to teach us moral lessons because that would assume that the writers are arbiters of morality. To put such an expectation on them would be wrong. As thinking individuals we should take the values that the authors present to us and critically examine them in order to reach our own conclusions. IN One Flew OVer the CUckoo's Nest, for instance, Ken Kessey places value on individuality which I admire, but he also has some disturbing ideas about the role of women which I reject.

In The Cuckoo's nest, the lesson we learn is important because we come to understand that while McMurphy may not be 'good' by nature, atleast not when he first appears. However his own actions demonstrate that he is indeed good, not perfect, he is still flawed but tries to better the lives of the other patients non-the less. This can be applied to our lives in that while some people may not be necessary perfect, they may still have redeeming qualities that make them a 'good person' and that if a person has flaws, it doesn't mean they're necessarily bad.
