What are the parts of a sentence that identify the sentence type (simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex)? Write a part and label it (e.g. When my phone rings in class [dependent clause]) or a complete sentence and label each part (e.g. When my phone rings [dep. clause], I pretend it's not mine [independent clause] = complex sentence. Give it a try.

Complex Sentence: To identify a complex sentence, first you need to see if one of the clauses has a subordinating conjunction in the beginning, such as until, before, etc. A single complex sentence should have at least one independent and dependent clause. For example.

Example #1: The bear will eat the honey (Independent Clause), unless it isn't hungry (Dependent Clause).

Explanation: Notice how the second clause has unless, because of this word, it makes this clause dependent, because it isn't a complete sentence. The First clause is independent because it can stand alone as a complete thought, the dependent clause isn't needed unless you want to put extra information.

Example #2: My mom won't give me back my PS4, unless I do my homeowork.

Explanation: The same is happening here. If the second clause doesn't have unless, it would be a compound sentence. The second clause would be a complete thought.
