He's a Moor, and he's always an outsider.
14 - during the time of the play there was a war going on between Venice and Turkey
Cyprus thrusted towards most of the action, Venetian won the Turks in 1571 after it attacked the Turks in 1570.

Women and attitudes towards them:
13- Women's moral equality was hotly debated in the Renaissance as much as their intellectual equality is discussed in the 20th century. Arguments about misogyny versus strong female characters were thrown around until eventually the arguments for virtuous women outnumbered the misogynist references.

Although there were many misogynist themes and quotes from the works of the Renaissance, there were also many strong female characters that were presented in the Bible and even some of Shakespeare's works such as lady macbeth. Ironically most of the arguments were made by men.

8- Woman is an excellent ornament of men, whose purpose of to procreate children, administer the family and in possession of dominion over which a man may exercise his authority and jurisdiction.

Women were considered ornaments, a object that decorates a man, and one that a man is allowed to boss around like he were to take control over "brute beasts" (Cornelius a Lapide 1638). Men had absolute authority over women.

Race, culture and religion:
3- Niggers and blackmoors crepping into the realm (queen elizabeth I's proclamation) who are relieved there to the great annoyance of her own liege people.

People of the time thought of "niggers and blackmoors" were of less value than the white race. They thought of them as the scourge of the races.

1. Women have clearly set gender roles on being timid, shamefast, mild, tractable and benign. Men are supposed to be fierce and strong in opinion and "covetous of glory". The clear gender roles can be considered as sexist by modern standards, and are supposed to behave and act a certain manner, and there would be a social enigma for acting otherwise.

6. Wives are described as "slippery", "unfaithful" and "treacherous" especially to a husband "without natural graces" or of old age. Women are deemed to be prone to committing adultery and other vices as such.

11. Venice is the heart of capitalism, she essentially parallel's Rome's civilization against the Celt's barbarism in that this Venetian sense of "capitalism" is challenging "the old European feudal powers". Venice is then this golden city, rich and diverse in culture and commerce. It is a "melting pot" of people of different races, of Christians and "Moors".
