Function: churns to break down food. The muscular walls contract break down food. This is mechanical digestion. Pepsin is located in the stomach and is a protein-digesting enzyme that makes amino acid chains into polypeptides. Hydrochloric acid is is also located in the stomach. It kills many harmful things that are ingested with food and it allows the pH balance to be at 2 or 3 which is optimal for pepsin. Gastrin is a hormone that is located in the stomach that releases more gastric juice and stimulates parietal cells. Mucus lines the stomach to protect the stomach from the high acidity.
