our event initial planning

We both wanted to bring to the surface artists who we think need more attention while considering our biggest musical interests. When doing so, we decided to create an ethereal concert consisting of ambient and shoegaze artists. We wanted to bring alight a relaxed concert where people can explore experimentation of sound, less for dancing and hanging out.

To begin with we noted artists we believe fit our concert theme. However most of these artists were not able to perform. We went on to communicating with people we met through Waterbear and posting stories on instagram to find new artists. In doing so we had to hold back our ethereal concert concept to have more artist options. Throughout our options we selected Crowd (Shoegaze), irreversible (Ambient) and Seren Orchid (ambient). Sarah Faith, Aeturnum, Eddie, Ecsher, Opal Mag, Muchiela and Lana Death Ray as our other options.

Our venue needed to be a dim/ dark atmosphere with the ability to have isolated sound, while being close to the city centre to draw attention from passers by. Komedia, Green Door Store, Rose Hill, Daltons, The Brunswick, ALPHABET, Hope and ruin.

We would like to fill in for the lack of live ambient music in Brighton to present more experimental genres for people who haven't heard it before while showcasing a fresh new sound. In terms of audience perspective we would like to bring them into an audio and visual experience which they might not normally experience in Brighton.

Post event analasysis and critical commentary

door sales:

we had some artists asking to put people on the guest-list on the day. if we told them beforehand that they can only add people on the guest-list before the event starts, we might've had more door sales or at least a more clear forecast for ticket sales.

artist soundchecks:

although we let the artists know of their soundcheck times by messaging an hour before as well as them having access to the time-sheets, our first artist on soundcheck (Seren Orchid) left the venue and was running 15 minutes behind. therefore Irreversible were on stage starting soundcheck. i had to ask them to get off as Seren Orchid would be back in 5-10 minutes, however they suggested they wont be long and that they can get off quickly. i let them stay on stage and their souncheck was done by the time Seren came back. i couldve given Seren Orchid a warning 15 minutes before they start. but luckily we managed to adapt with this issue.

Crowd had a specific sound that was hard to work with, but we fixed the volumes on the amps to get clearer vocals for them.

riders: i had enough time before doors opened and artists began their sounchecks to get riders for the artists.

live sound:

even though crowd's soundcheck went well, they incr9eased their amp volumes slightly just before starting their set and the vocals were harder to hear.

Seren Orchid had issues with mic feedback, this could've been avoided if they had more time to soundcheck.

the event finished early: having one more artist would've brought us more ticket sales and given us more time to bring an audience. We were hoping Escher would be our headliner, but since their manager let us know that their gig moved back to 3rd December (same day as our gig), we were down to 3 acts. we decided to go ahead with it and not ask another artist to play as we wanted to stick with our concert theme/energy. i am happy with this decision, although next time i think we could've started preparing artsists earlier, for example i emailed Escher's manager too late due to not yet having enough detail on our event (setlist, ticket prices, poster design, venue, timings)

Im unsure about the order of the setlist: I placed Seren Orchid as headliner because he is the only artist with music on Spotify and has played more events than the other artists. Crowd have only just begun playing live, however they were the loudest and most upbeat performance. when the headliner played, it was a very calm performance. I believe in the audiences view, Crowd would usually be a headliner, however the positive thing about Crowd playing second is that they built more of a crowd, setting up the headliner for a good show.

considering our very niche event hosting up and coming or lesser known artists, we believe our ticket sales were a okay.

we sold 22 tickets.

we did not break even.

we have learned a lot from creating this event and thought it to be a success.
