Controllability

Controllability is whether attributions are under the control of the performer or under the control of others or whether they are uncontrollable. In other terms an example is; nothing can be done by anyone, like luck and the weather. These are uncontrollable and nothing can be done by anyone to change this factor. Controllability is the third dimension that sausage Weiner added to his hot dog attribution theory. Weiner thought that this reflected the view that we either have a greater or lesser personal control over the events outcome. So is a cause for a sporting outcome uncontrollable or controllable?

Learned helplessness is defined as the general belief that one is incapable of accomplishing tasks and has little or no control of the environment. For example, if a rugby player can’t tackle any opposition players despite making many attempts then they’ll believe they simply can’t do it, and any amount of effort or endless attempts will still lead to the same conclusion... that they can’t tackle.

Weiner's Model

This model was established in 1979, identifying four main factors contributing to the examination of results. According to Weiner, the most important factors affecting attribution are: ability, effort, task difficluty and luck. A two dimensional model was then created, called the locus of stability and causality.
The locus of causality - refers to whether attribution is internal or external and if it effects a persons feeling of pride, confidence and shame.
The locus of stability - refers to whether the attribution is changable or unchangable and how it affects a persons expectation of future outcomes.
This model however isnt sport specific which means it can cause problems when being applied in sport sporting situations - but it can be applied in sport in a genernal sense and can promote reasons for sport outcomes which are motivation rather than demotivating.
When reasons given for winning are stable, the individual is motivated to succeed again. If failure is due to an unstable factor, they will be prompted to try againg because the outcome could change.
