This makes the audience feel like Preston is a kind person that has a humorous and caring loving family. The purpose of this is to make the audience emotionally invested in Preston. This was demonstrated through the evidence. “Prestons motionless body… lying in a pool of blood” (Pg. 92) This evidence showed the audience how harsh this scene was. Empathy was very much projected towards the audience. Therefore, Rodney Bridge successfully used empathy to manipulate the audience.

The author uses friendly banter and humour in dialogue to show how good the relationship is between Preston and his family causing us to naturally form a connection to him. This is shown when Preston says ‘very funny Aimee. You should go on tour’ (pg.77). he has said this because he loves to joke around with his family and that is how he shows that he cares and loves them. This causes the reader to form a connection to him, and Rodney has wanted this connection to be made so that when it comes to his death it is more of a shock. This links the authors overall purpose of creating a connection between the characters and the audience by making the main character a really good person which causes everyone to like him leading into his death in chapter 8.

A key idea explored in this chapter is that drugs are harmful and leads to death of teenagers. In chapter 8 this is shown when Preston can’t resist the drugs and ends up taking them, then he is left alone and falls off a balcony and dies. The author uses strong descriptive language to show that drugs have many effects on teenagers which can lead to many deaths. This is shown when the author writes Preston made up his mind.
