For each of the characters below, write one quote from the text that either directly or indirectly characterizes that person. Think about things like a character's physical appearance, words, actions, relationships, motivations, conflicts, and how other people react to that character. Then, write 1-2 sentences to illustrate the significance (with an analysis verb) of that quote in regards to the characterization of that character. Make sure to properly cite your quote. You can use quotes from Ch. 1-5, you do not have to only choose from Ch. 4-5.

On my part, I went to much trouble, sometimes, not to provoke her" (34).

Significance: Scout's decision to consciously try not make things more difficult for Calpurnia demonstrates a sense of maturity that is developing her. This emerging maturity is especially apparent now in comparison to her childish reaction to Calpurnia's chastisement of Scout's table manners in Chapter 2.

I beat him up twice but it did no good, he only grew closer to Jem." (54)

As we see throughout the book so far Scout is not really considered a "girly girl" with her brother even mentioning that and this quote shows that. The significance is that it exemplifies her maturity level relating to the beginning of the book. She is a very aggressive person taking Dill's words very seriously and having a very short temper when it came to that.

(66)

Jem is someone who we haven't really seen in depth yet but, we have started to see a weird relationship with his father due to him not having a very strong relationship with him like Scout. (39)

I think this quote shows me beneath the surface. As we know Atticus isn't really the most parent figure compared to Calpurnia who has taught the children and mostly raised them. I feel like this demonstrates that Atticus is trying to be the best parent he can be and yet has trouble doing so but is trying with he taking time to sit and talk to Scout.
