         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Gold Standard</strong>- the system by which the value of a currency was defined in terms of gold, for which the currency could be exchanged. <br><strong>Bank Holiday- </strong>a day on which banks are officially closed, observed as a public holiday.<br><strong>The Hundred Days- </strong>marked the period between Napoleon's return from exile on the island of Elba to Paris on 20 March 1815 and the second restoration of King Louis XVIII on 8 July 1815. <br><strong>Fireside Charts- </strong>the term used to describe a series of 30 evening radio conversations given by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt between 1933 and 1944.<br><strong>Deficit Spending </strong>government spending, in excess of revenue, of funds raised by borrowing rather than from taxation.<br><strong>Entitlement Programs- </strong>a government program that guarantees certain benefits to a particular group or segment of the population. <br><strong>Court-Packing- </strong>. A move by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to increase the size of the Supreme Court and then bring in several new justices who would change the balance of opinion on the Court.<br><strong>Broker State- </strong>a state<strong> </strong>brokering the competing claims of numerous groups.<br><strong>Safety Net- </strong>A net placed to catch an acrobat or similar performer in case of a fall.</div>]]></description>
