  • Citation Notes: During the time of Westward Expansion, communication was extremely difficult. The were no radios, telephone or internet. People were separated by long distances that included difficult terrain, inhospitable climates, and hostile Native Americans and bandits. During this time, there were two main attempts to circumvent this distance and the challenges they presented. The first was the Pony Express. The second was the invention of the telegraph, the precursor to the telephone.
