A Stolen Life
by Jacyee Dugard

Rate: 7
I would rate this autobiography seven out of 10. The memoir jumped right into the action however, towards the end it was slow.

We start with a girl name Jacyee Dugard who is writing about her horrific kidnapping and her struggle to cope with it. throughout her kidnapping she goes through horrific actions. The nonstop action makes you keep reading to a very satisfying ending.

In the memoir, there is a major external conflict as well as a major internal conflict within Jacyee herself. The major external conflict would be her kidnapping and her struggles with her kidnapper Phillip and his wife Nancy. At first, Jacyee is terrified of her kidnapper, like any person would be. She struggles throughout the years of her kidnapping to get along with Phillip and Nancy and get used to her life with them. However, the internal conflict is much different. Throughout all the years of her kidnapping, Jacyee is constantly fighting with herself. On one hand, she wants to run, to go and find someone and tell them what has happened to her. However, she is terrified for her safety if she would run or scream out to someone.

The ending of the book is not effective. Throughout all her years of being in a real life prison, her ending was not as grand as it should have been. We read through many years of Jaycee life throughout her the births of her children, to her horrible living conditions, and her overall torture. Her discovery should have been more explained to the readers and elaborated on more. The very ending is when Jaycee and her mother and family are to be reunited. This ending should be grand and huge after 18 years of not seeing each other. However, it is very much downgraded and anticlimactic.
