Ela nasceu na cidade de Auckland, Nova Zelândia, a 7 de novembro de 1996. Filha de Vic O'Connor, um engenheiro civil, e Sonja Yelich, uma premiada poetisa neozelandia, ela foi criada no bairro suburbano de Devonport, em Auckland, ao lado de mais três irmãos, um casal de irmãos mais novos, Indy e Angelo, e uma irmã mais velha, Jerry. Ella tem ascendência croata e irlandesa.
Lorde compõe todas as suas músicas. Até os treze anos, ela escrevia contos, mas com o passar do tempo, a artista passou a se dedicar a criar canções; no início, de forma despretensiosa, mas com o passar do tempo, ela foi se aperfeiçoando durante a criação de suas composições. A daughter of Vic O'Connor, a civil engineer, and Sonja Yelich, an award-winning New Zealand poet, she was raised in the suburban suburb of Devonport, side of three more brothers, a couple of younger brothers, Indy and Angelo, and an older sister, Jerry. Ella has Croatian and Irish ancestry.
Lord composes all his songs. Until the age of thirteen, she wrote short stories, but over time, the artist began to dedicate herself to creating songs; at first, in an unpretentious way, but with the passage of time, she was perfecting herself during the creation of her compositions.
