My analysis of Gate A-4 is that one person and their culture can bring everyone together. Being able to connect to someone and make them feel like they belong in a place unfamiliar to them can cause an entire community to come together and feel at home with each other. This to me, made me feel as if we are moving forward with society and becoming more accepting to race. Even though there was some hesitate at the beginning of this story, in the end everyone came together as one. Also being accepting to race leads to being accepting to all genders because as heard in this poem, gender was not a problem that was brought amongst anyone. In TEWWG discrimination against race was harder to deal with because unlike in this story, Tea Cake and Janie did not have people that they could just call on the phone to help them feel less outcasted to the world.

The Power of a Single Story

My analysis of “ The Danger of a single story” is that many Americans stereotype immigrants that come to America because of their race or what country they come from. American literature has portrayed other countries as bad or horrid and focuses on their suffering. Then Americans are surprised when an immigrant tells about the good things that go on in their country and not the bad. When reading literature about different races and cultures people then assume that the person they are reading about protrayes everyone else of that race and country. People stereotype others based off of what they have heard about their race and culture but everyone needs to realize that not all people are the same. This relates to TEWWG because when Tea Cake started seeing Janie everyone thought that he was using her for money only because they have seen other young colored men do so, but not everyone's the same.

What is White Privledge, Really?

White privilege is seen more in America and is beginning to spread around the world. White privilege is being seen in our everyday lives and has started to interfere within other cultures. I have noticed white privilege when I went to visit my family in Italy. I saw my little cousins wearing shirts with writing on it in English and I even helped them with their English vocabulary homework. When I went to my Aunts salon in Milano, the workers knew how to speak fluent English in order to tend to the American tourists. While visiting the beach with my cousins, they introduced me to their friends who spoke fluent English that the Schools now require on them starting at the age of six. White privilege is changing cultures so that Americans can feel welcomed any place they go, but I don’t believe that we confirm our culture for anyone else to feel welcome. At this school we don’t even require taking a new language anymore and to me that shows that we are abusing our white privilege.

After reading “Indian Education” I noticed that there was white privilege and racism shown. While the Indian boy was starving at home, white girls were throwing up their well put together lunches to be skinny, but the Indian boy was skinny and not by choice. People take advantage of what they have. Just because a person is colored or has different hair, does not mean that they are less intelligent than white people or have less worth. People should not be classified by the color of their skin. Everyone should be given equal opportunities in the world to show their true potential despite the color of their skin or where they come from.

After hearing “What Kind of Asian Are You”, I have taken away that innocent stereotypes can actually have a brutal meaning behind it. Jokes about different races may seem funny but behind those jokes are historic events that have made people stereotype races in jokes. People assume the race of someone just based of the color of their skin or the way they look. But race goes deeper than that, it goes to heritage and ancestry. Assuming someone's race can then affect them to be confused as who they really should be. Society should take in consideration for how assuming someone's race can affect them.

Gender Inequality

My analysis of a slam poetry by two young girls called "gender inequality", is now I have realized how down played discrimination against women is. Women are seen as kitchen maids and housewives and should not be seen as a valuable source in society. Men will do unspeakable things to women but will get a minimum to none punishment. A woman is viewed as acting inappropriate when she does anything out of the “social norms” of being a woman or even dresses like she is “asking for it”. A woman is looked down upon for speaking up to a man but a man is not looked down upon when he expresses his anger out on the woman. Just as in TEWWG, when Janie finally stands up for herself and Joe reaction is to hit her, and that was okay with everyone else.

Here's How South African Students Talk About Race and Gender

After reading “ Here’s how South African students talk about race and gender”, I noticed that there are similar situations to America. Women are supposedly very equal in South America which is just like the same here in America. Just like in America, South American men still carry around the attitude that they are better than women and women are still seen as a weaker power and down played in society. In America women are told that we are equal in society but are still paid less than men for doing the same jobs. Women are still scared to walk the streets alone in fear of rape or robbery. In South Africa men still get away with raping women even though they are supposedly equal. Even when women are told they are equal to society, there is something that always separates them in some way.

Violence Against Women in the Americas

Gender violence is a big problem among women especially the amount not reported. Many women are abused physically and sexually by their partners and most women do not report a problem. Women are also treated differently than men and are not treated as seriously by doctors. I understand why women would not report abuse because they could be afraid of the consequences that follow or that they would not be taken seriously and no effect would happen. This topic of abuse connects to TEWWG, when Janie gets hit by Joe and does not say anything because she feels as if he has a greater power over her because he has the money. Men make women feel inferior to them which seems to take all power away from women and their voices.

Gender Inequality in the Workplace

After watching a video on Gender Inequality in the workplace I have noticed that men are paid more and treated differently than women. To me this is unfair especially when in most cases women can be equally experienced or even more experienced for a job. Businesses already start out by hiring men over women but that only leads to men then hiring more men over women. Women can be more qualified or equally as qualified as men for jobs but that is overlooked because they have never been seen as a power figure in society. More women go to college than men but are rarely ever able to show their ability of power because society does not always give them a chance.

Gender Equality: Now

After watching “Gender Equality:Now”, I have realized that by discriminating against genders is only holding us back from progressing as a society. Making women and men conform to society's gender norms is only holding us back from showing our true potential to the world and what each gender can truly offer. Everyone should have the ability to earn an equal pay and build their own lives for themselves without being held back by gender stereotypes. Also being forced to follow gender rules from ancestors is only making it harder for this world to progress into a better society. When equal rights are not being given to all genders, how is everyone supposed to help contribute into making this world a better place.
