Fue fundada en 1939 de la mano de Amalio López.
Con su reforma en 1991 pasa a denominarse OSPA.
Dio su primer concierto en el Teatro Campoamor de Oviedo el 12 de mayo de 1991.
Actualmente está compuesta por profesores de 20 nacionalidades y con la dirección titular del búlgaro Rossen Milanov.
A partir de la temporada 2012 2013 el principal director invitado de la orquesta es David Lockington.
Realiza más de 70 conciertos sinfónicos al año y entre los conciertos extraordinarios destacan el del Día del Asturias y Premios Príncipe de Asturias.

Se presentó en el Teatro Campoamor el 6 de febrero de 1999.
Es una orquesta totalmente involucrada en el tejido social de la cuidad, con una programación que abarca desde conciertos para niños, conciertos de verano, de bandas sonoras de películas, conciertos en el estadio de fútbol Carlos Tartiere...
En la actualidad el director titular es Lucas Macías.
Oviedo Filarmonía pertenece a la Asociación Española de Orquestas Sinfónias (AEOS) desde el 2003.
