This FOUN 1101 course was an interested course for me this semester. This was because I had little appreciation for the Caribbean and I didn’t know many of the words used. Even though Caribbean Studies was compulsory at 6th form level, I never really understand until now. After this course, I hope I would have a greater appreciation for the history of civilisation and the Caribbean on a whole. Some improvements that can be made to course are:

· To ensure that if you are having online tutorials to let lecturers make sure that their equipment’s are working properly before tutorials begins. For my tutorials, I hardly use to hear the teacher due to statics.

· The course can be a little more interesting. Some students can’t learn from slides all the times, so one or two fields trip would be greatly appreciated.

It was a pleasure doing this course.

Becoming more a pathway for moral degradation with our young people, is the effect Dancehall music have on the youths.
In accordance to the article “Police wants study on effects of dancehall music on crime” dated Sunday April 24th, 2016, I would have to agree that lyrics influence unruly behavior which would lead to crime. Since dancehall music is a big part of Jamaica’s culture, children and young people spend time listening to the different artistes.
Artistes like Ajidja ”Vybz Kartel” Palmer, Tommy lee Sparta, Mavado and all the other dancehall artistes are role models in Jamaica and the Caribbean to some young people, and they will do whatever the artiste says in the song. For example when Vybz Kartel sand his song Clarks almost three-quarter of dancehall music followers started to wear Clarks shoes. Young persons create different informal groups like the Gaza and Gully. When these two artistes are not agreeing or they are creating diss tracks for each other, these two groups begin to war with each other because of the artistes.
“If you speak about violence, sing about violence and you are violent, then there must be a correlation there”. I would agree with this statement since the mind is easily influenced by what we take into our system.
Adidja “Vybz Kartel” Palmer is now imprisoned for life for a murder in 2011. This man was killed for allegedly stealing guns from him and his friends. This is just an example you are or you do what you sing or preach.

http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/Police-want-study-on-effects-of-dancehall-music-on-crime_58703
Link of the article

Over the years, dancehall music has developed a symbol of explicit sexual imagery and violence.

Even though singing and music in general plays a vital role in the learning and communication process of culture, children from as old as toddler stage tends to mimic similar attitude and behavior that they see an adult portray. When in the teen years or by extent young adulthood, a person is usually in the stage where they are still seeking for their identity. Thus, most teenagers in the Caribbean, tends to seek interest in a role model who is attached in the music industry mainly in the genre of dancehall. Not only do they seek interest but they portray attitudes displayed in the lyrics of the dancehall songs. Some of the themes that is being promoted in the lyrics includes:

· Drugs and alcohol abuse which is being glamorized

· Suicide as an alternative or solution

· Graphic violence

· Sex which focuses on control, sadism, masochism, incest, children devaluing women and violence towards women.

Young, impressionable minds then adopt these themes as part of their daily lifestyle. In schools, the young men, believes that being a “bad man”, “hot skull” and “chargie” are decent descriptions for themselves. It makes them feel like they have find themselves, and such is becoming a norm. Additionally, dancehall easily have an influence on the young people, which tends to be mostly young men in veneration of feuds. They even affirm an informal allegiance and follow a clique blindly like characters in a play desperately searching for an author.

Such false behavior is elevated in the commonly publicized unfriendly divide between popular Dancehall artistes Mavado (of the Gully Side) and Vybz Kartel (of the Gaza).

Teenagers identifies dancehall genre as a trigger for early sexual intercourse and sexual explicit behavior. However, since teenagers are very adventurous and are always eager to try new things, it leads to increasing rate of teenage pregnancy and promiscuity. Sexual explicit behavior aids also in the increase of HIV/AIDS and STD’s/STI’S.

Glorifying of Guns in the Dancehall

Explicit Sexual Behavior
