My Name

My Parents named me from a Bible Character. This is not a very original tactic in the south, but they loved the character as well as his name. My mother always told me my name stood for being courageous and being a bold leader. She made it sound heroic and noble. It was like my name had some kind tremendous destiny on it that I was suppose to live up to.
While the name “Caleb does come from Israeli and Hebrew origins meaning faithful and bold its overwhelming original use meant “dog.” Even though it is not as prestigious as my mother makes it sound It still has some of the qualities my mother described.
My Name has been mispronounced for years by people outside my family. I personally have never thought “Caleb” is that hard to understand, but time and time again I am proven wrong. Some mispronunciations include: KA-LEEB, KALOB, KELIB, KAYLEY, and KALE. My childhood dentist announced my name as KAYLEEB for 13 years straight. Other than these issues I have never had any trouble because of my name.
•When it comes to nicknames I have one that I liked as a child and one I could not understand as a child. C-HAWK was my nickname throughout elementary school and middle school because it took the first letter of Caleb and added it to the first four letters of my last name, Hawkins. I thought it was so cool when I was younger. On the other hand I dreaded the name CABLE. My 8th grade math teacher started calling me that and I have hated it ever since.

Confidence Under Pressure: I think my greatest trait is the ability to not stress about my circumstances. If there is a lot of pressure to get something done I have the ability to stay calm and collected while getting the job done. This trait is one of the reasons I have had so many great opportunities in school and the workplace. I think it sets me apart as a leader and someone who can be trusted with high stakes tasks.

An Important Object: My Jeep

My Jeep Wrangler represents how and where I prefer to spend my time. I have always been someone who loves to be in the woods; whether its kaykaing, hunting, fishing, or camping I spend every minute I can outdoors. Growing up I learned many things that not every kid gets to experience unless you spend days and days outdoors cultivating skills. I think this expererience is a lost art in some ways, and I represent a decreasing minority of people who know how to enjoy nature to the fullest. The Jeep I have allows me to take a vehicle deeper into the woods than other cars, and is symbol of an outdoor lifestyle I am proud of.

There could be strong arguments for my privilege due to my socio-economic status, gender, or race, but one thing that stands out to me more than anything is the education I was given from Kindergarten through High School. I went to Private School my entire life which has afforded me so many opprtunities. It also gave me access to endless resources, highly rigorous courses, and a healthy school environment. I did not realize how much of an impact my education had until I started my college career. In my freshman classes I could tell I was prepared extremely well while others around me were struggling to survive.

Cultural Biases: Rural Stereotypes

My mother's side of the family is from Jesup, Georgia. Jesup is a small town in south Georgia has as much economic opportunity as it does red lights. Our family grew up as one of the poorest in that town for decades. My mother decided she did not want that kind of life for herself and went to college. She is now pharmacist running her own store and has distanced herself from her family economically. Growing up my mother did her best to make sure her own children would never end up in the lifestyle her family lived in. This becomes a bias because I really only ever heard the negatives about poor rural communities and had preconcieved notions on these groups of people based on my mother's experience.

Cultural Discomfort: Basketball

As I got into my later elementary years I continued to get better at basketball. My dad decided I needed to play on a team that traveled the south east in order to continue my development. The discomfort came when I was the only white person that played on team; I had always been around black kids from my neighborhood but had never been a minority in this way before. At first it was a little nerve racking because all the players, families, and coaches were black except for me and my family. In the end it was a great experience; I played on that team for six years until my junior year of high school, and some of those guys are some of my closest friends today even if it was a rocky beginning.

She worked three jobs and raised my mother and aunt by herself in order to give them an oppportunity to succeed. Her painstaking work allowed our family to rise from poverty. She has always showed me that hard work is not a choice but a lifestyle. Me and my sisters always think of her when faced with tough tasks and remember what kind of work ethic runs in our family. My grandmother still works today at 70 years old, and I doubt she will ever retire.

I am consisting checking to see what is going on politically and enjoy reading articles and op-eds from around the nation. Because I do not have much time to sit down and actually watch the news on TV this is a way I can stay connected throughout the day by basically carrying digital newspaper around in my pocket all day.

The most incredible and impactful book I have ever read was a book called "Bonhoeffer" by Eric Metaxas. It is a biography about a German pastor and theologian who is also as spy in a plot to eliminate Hitler and the Nazi party. The story of this man's life and how he impacted so many people left me lost for words. Bonhoeffer was eventually arrested and put death after a years in prison, and the book shares some of the letters and writings of his while in confinement. I was so intrigued by this man I made a trip to research him in Washingtion D.C. last year.

Because of how diverse the area aroun me is there could be multiple students who speak different languages that are not just spanish. I do not know how anyone prepares for that, but hopefully experience will create confidence.

I think my greatest stength would be the ability to connect with any student know matter how different they are than me. I thrive on finding common interests and similarities that build bridges with students. I have confidence that I can make any child laugh, and to bring joy to all student's day. I know this sounds very simple, but the skill of relating to people (especially little people) is noticed in classroom, and sets me apart as trustworthy and positive individual in student's lives along with being the starting point for great teaching.
