This video helped us understand the meaning behind the allegory of the cave and the message that Plato was trying to give. Plato was trying to tell us that we must open our eyes and must venture out of the cave, being the expectations of our society. We can fix errors in our own reasoning, just as the man had to accept that the shadows were not the real living things. The path out of the cave which we live in is philosophy, by doing this the world will become more clear.

In Plato's Allegory, the cave essentially stands in as this mindset, or rather, atmosphere ignorance. The people inside have only ever known said ignorance, as they were raised around it. The light outside however, as with the area around it(outside the cave), essentially represents the truth, as does everything outside. Here, after awhile of learning to let go of one's ignorance, the person who comes out finally learns about the light, or rather, truth. The chains represent the remaining population's stubbornness, their refusal to try and see what the enlightened person is talking about. They stubbornly cling to what they've known, and wouldn't dare to go up and see what this light or "truth" is. The darkness is this, muddled reality that the remaining population knows of. They believe themselves to be truly smart and knowledgeable because of their ability to link the correct names to each shadow...but they'll never truly know of the actual beings that hold those shadows

As one person had been freed from the cave, he was able to see the sun and its own bit of realities. After seeing this new truth, he goes back to the people in the cave and tries to tell them that the shadows are not as true as what is outside of the cave. When the people of the cave do not believe the man's claims, this shows the ignorance that people have to new ideas.

I believe that the cave is a place where people who don't want to understand philosophy are located. They are prisoners in the cave because they will never have the opportunity to see "the sun," which is philosophy. Some elements that Plato uses in the allegory such as, chains, light, and darkness are examples of things in society. For example, I believe that the chains are people's opinions that won't let them fully understand the light. I believe the light are the ideas of philosophy. The darkness is the lack of philosophy in the cave because there is no light to shine in the cave.

Firstly, Plato's argument is that if one pursues their own idealistic thinking, then it will not be possible for them to relate with another's different frame of mind. And these comparisons help validate that argument because as we see described in the allegory of the cave, once the prisoner is released to the outside world and discovers reality, then going back to the prisoners and both of them not wanting to come to a comparison with the other's "flawed" thinking because they believe theirs is more superior and realistic than the others.

He uses comparisons to make his argument by comparing the shadows that the people in the cave think are reality to the actual objects that cast the shadow, which are reality, but isn't accepted to be the truth by the public.

It shows an abstract version of reality instead of the real thing. The chains that hold the prisoners down represent the close-mindedness of humans because when you open your mind (or become released from the chains) you are able to comprehend much more. The darkness represents an ordinary person's train of thought and the light represents a philosopher's way of thinking, how they are able to think around reality instead of within.

When discussing the politics of things like things like this, your private advantage in this case for keeping guns might be that you don't have to do away with your gun collection. At the same time, while you protest the need, or rather the want to ban guns, you also serve in the public affairs of a lot of the general populace who are indeed pro-gun, like, y'know, right to bear arms and all that. Can't say much other than that though, I'm not particularly versed in politics. Don't think I want to be. A lot of (in my opinion) stupidity in that area right now. Not enough facts, people are instead right now focused on getting followers via emotion instead of logic and reasoning.

Plato is using these arguments to describe how there are ignorant people in this world that are too ignorant to understand the ideas of philosophy. They would rather continue to believe in their beliefs than to hear the ideas of others. Plato uses these comparisons to argue that ignorant people should take a chance, and see what other people have to say with philosophy. These people should give philosophy a try because maybe their whole outlook o life will change.

Plato's argument about working on public affairs and working for one's own private advantage and stating that they cannot mix is agreeable. It could be said that when working for the public is an act of unselfishness and when working for personal advantage is an act of selfishness. Because these two subjects are completely opposite from one another, it is difficult to see them together. If one were to try and do this, it may seem that one will dominate the other. In modern day politics, it is known that people may try to better their image by stating false facts to the public because it is what the public wants to here. In presidential elections, candidates often try to outdo the other to make themselves more likable and win an election. This can prove how working for public affairs and working for one's private advantage cannot mix due to how these two topics contradict each other.

Through the years, there are been many people who have lied to get into office. These people are just looking to have power and be able to benefit themselves. In order to achieve this, the candidate may just give people what they want to hear, they try to do positive things to gain more votes and popularity. Once the person is in office, they do things without even considering how it would affect the people. The person only cares about themselves and how it affects them. For example, there have been presidents who would sell important things without considering the people and they only sell it for their own benefit, for the money. In most situations regarding contemporary politics, people would always put their wants and need above others

I believe Plato uses his comparisons to show people that while they look on the material world, to things such as silver and gold, they should rather be looking to what those things represent, virtue and wisdom.
