Gender Identity & Expression

Gender identity is what an individual chooses to identify as. Examples includes male, female, transgender, etc. Gender expression refers to the way you choose to express that identity, examples would include long nails if you were a feminine female or men clothing if your masculine male. Gender identity and expression can often cause confusion and at times insecurity in students at schools. Which is why I would instruct students about these terms and allow them to know that they are safe and accepted to be who they so desire.

Neurodiversity is the concept where it is normal for people to have brains that function differently from others. This concept is acceptable and acknowledges that all brains function in their own unique way. It is important to understand neurodiversity as a teacher because you will work with and come across numerous students throughout your career. We must know and accept that all children do not think alike or in one solid way, but all have their own way of thinking. Also, some students might have autism or ADHD which can affect their way of thinking tremendously.

define race as a categorized group of individuals based on common physical and social traits. (Often times it deals with color of skin) ex. Black or White. As a teacher I would 100% cover this in my class because, in today's time racism still exists and it is important to teach students that we are all human and deserve to be respected regardless of our skin tones/race. I do believe in the statement, because I genuinely do see people for who they are within and not their color.
