How do you get other teachers going in there, looking at the impact and feeding back to help the teacher see what it’s like being a student in their classroom? I’m a great fan of recording classrooms and using video to show teachers how they look to students. That’s the power of video, it’s another way to see your impact” – Prof. John Hattie.

Although reflection implies an individual practice, this is a process that requires and deserves support from the collective school community. Collaborative reflection will provide opportunities for teachers to implement practices specific to their identified areas of growth. It will create an environment that promotes risk-taking, collaboration, and time for guided reflection. And it will manifest exemplar models of practice and of reflection that, in turn, develop the mindful habit of continual self-reflection and improvement. Our students deserve nothing less.

Johns' Model of Reflection, developed by Dr. Christopher Johns, is a structured approach to reflective practice, commonly used in healthcare and other professional fields. The model encourages practitioners to reflect on their experiences in a systematic way to improve their practice and professional development. It involves a series of key questions that guide reflection on a particular experience.

The model consists of six key components:

Description: What happened during the event or experience?

Feelings: What were your thoughts and feelings during the experience?

Evaluation: What was good and bad about the experience?

Analysis: Why did things happen the way they did? What could be the underlying reasons for the experience?

Conclusion: What could you have done differently in the situation?

Action Plan: What will you do in similar situations in the future?

By reflecting on each of these components, Johns' Model helps individuals to critically analyze their experiences, identify areas for improvement, and enhance their professional skills and knowledge.

Atkins and Murphy's Model of Reflection is a widely used framework designed to guide reflective practice, particularly in healthcare. The model focuses on a step-by-step approach to help individuals think critically about their experiences and learn from them. It encourages self-awareness and promotes continuous professional development.

The model consists of six key stages:

Awareness of the uncomfortable feeling: Recognizing when something doesn't feel right during an experience.

Description of the experience: Detailing the event, what happened, and who was involved.

Analysis of the experience: Exploring what went well, what didn’t, and why the event unfolded the way it did.

Identification of learning: Recognizing what you learned from the experience and how it affects your practice.

Exploring alternative actions: Considering other possible approaches and what could have been done differently.

Action plan: Deciding on actions to improve future practice based on insights gained from reflection.

This model emphasizes critical thinking and helps individuals refine their practice by reflecting on past events to foster better decision-making and growth.

Critical reflection , as Brookfield (1995, p. 8) notes, has two purposes: “(1) to understand how considerations of power undergird, frame and distort educational processes and interactions. (2) To question assumptions and practices that seem to make our teaching lives easier but actually work against our own best long term interests.” Although largely ignored within TESOL until very recently, scholars such as Graham Crooks (2013) call for a more critical second language pedagogy that includes “teaching for social justice, in ways that support the development of active, engaged citizens who … will be prepared to seek out solutions to the problems they define and encounter, and take action accordingly”

Farrell, Thomas S.C., and Thomas S.C.
