Saberdo, a graduate of Bachelor in Elementary Education at University of La Salette, Santiago City, Isabela major in History, now a Grade-IV Teacher handling Science, ESP and EPP at Victoria Reyes Elementary School, City Schools Division of Dasmarinas. WHAT QUALITIES MADE A GREAT TEACHER? I have the ability to survive. I am a survivor AND I BECAME PASSIONATE. Having a pupil who is roaming around inside the classroom while I am lecturing but knew the answer when I asked, having a pupil who cried out loud suddenly and need to give immediate attention, having a pupil who suddenly nosebleed and I need to give first aid, having a pupil who suddenly stubbed his seatmate with a pencil and I need to bring the wounded pupil to the clinic and settle the argument afterwards, having a pupil who outrageously mad because his seatmate teased him, having a pupil who could not read and cannot cope with class discussion and need to have a remedial class, having a pupil who came to school once in every two weeks and I need to locate the home address and visit, interview and convince to come to school again, having 32 pupils with 32 different attitudes, handling an angry parent because her child told her the other side of the story. These are some of the experiences I have encountered in my seven years of teaching in the public school. These experiences tested my patience, endurance and heart as a teacher and gave me enough courage to continue teaching instead of giving up because behind those not-so-good attitudes of the learners were the unspoken anger, self-pity, longing for a motherly-love, seeking for an attention, a “shoulder to cry on” and a place where they might belong. I found fulfilment when I saw positive results: when a non-reader read few words, phrases and sentences, when a quarrelsome boy became friendly, when two pupils who fought forgave each other, when a shy girl participated in the discussion and role play, when a soft-spoken pupil had talked, when kindness and respect started to manifest in my pupils. I am willing to learn something new. I attended seminars/webinars, trainings, GADs, stress-reliever activities, and different programs in the school to upgrade my knowledge and skills, grow professionally, emotionally and socially. I am willing to learn something new during this pandemic to cope with the new normal teaching-learning process. Now, I am currently pursuing my post graduate study for professional growth and some practical reasons I became a YES-O adviser wherein I am one of those who propagate the plastic-free advocacy in our school by using tumbler and other sustainable materials instead of using single-use plastics. I can adapt easily. I handled Grade III for five years and handled Grade IV for 2 years now. I specialized in History but I am now teaching Science, EPP and ESP. I can adapt to these changes by being flexible and studying my lessons in advance. I am very considerate and generous.
