It is said to be like the “anime version of Rocky” (Top 10 Anime of the 70's). The main character, Joe Yabuski, lives in Tokyo’s slums where he fights local gangs. After ending up in prison, Joe is introduced to a boxer named Rikiishi Tooru who spikes Joe’s interest in the sport. When Joe gets out, he takes on boxing professionally.

It examines elements of politics, war, and space combat that is said to be captivating.

Set in the 19th century during the depression period of Italy, it focuses on a boy named Marco who goes off on his own to search for his sick mother after letters stopped coming to him.

Instead of happy hero stories and rise of the underdog, Japan moved to anime that focused on a destroyed Earth and intergalactic future set animation. With kids from the 60’s growing up, they wanted to create anime that was more for adults and reflected the world's current and constant war state (A Brief History of Anime: the 1970s).
