This lead to it becoming a Category 3 cyclone by the 12th February.  NASA's Aqua satellite saw cold cloud top temperatures near -62°c, indicating very powerful storms circling the centre of Cyclone Winston. Data also shows that the sea surface temperature was near 31°c, which is warm enough to strengthen and fuel the storm. 
Cyclone Winston took a very unusual route towards Fiji. It perform a 'loop-the-loop' . The cyclone started west of Fiji before moving south, then back to the north and finally approaching the island from the east.

Cyclones form over warm water, above 26°c. This confines cyclones to forming in tropical latitudes. However, once formed, cyclones can then move outside the tropics.
The strongest winds for Tropical Cyclones are on the left of the cyclone, because that's where the winds are adding to the forward motion of the storm.
Cyclones are pushed around by winds averaged through the depth of the atmosphere. So if the wind direction is unusual here, then the cyclone may track in an unusual direction. Other factors related to the rotation of the earth may also cause a cyclone to track in weird directions.

The estimated cost of damage caused Cyclone Winston is around $470 million. It impacted children's education. The tropical cyclone damaged and destroyed at least 240 schools. Fiji depends largely on tourism with thousands of visitors each year. Among the damage, Fiji Roads Authority was impacted the most, with an estimated cost of $135 million. The cyclone cost the agriculture sector, excluding the sugar industry, nearly $120 million. The sugar industry alone had estimated damages of $80 million

Australian Defence Force helicopters were sent to hard-hit areas. The Royal Australian Navy sent their biggest ships to Fiji, and another aircraft was sent to relief efforts from Cyclone Winston. Other than the land, the ocean was also destroyed, with patches of Fiji's coral reefs torn up. The reefs could of been destroyed directly by the cyclone, or heavy rainfall on the land could of carried sediments and pollutants into rivers which then head into the sea. This water could then smother the coral, killing it. There was a report that there was substantial breakage and dislodgement of the coral reefs, destroying habitats for marine life. The fish depend on habitat provided by the coral so therefore the plants, animals, and people would be affected. There was concern about potential impact fish stocks, which local communities rely on them for food and money.
