In contrast to the beliefs of his times, he saw art and science as subjects that were tied hand to hand. His articulate studies of the human anatomy and of light were what made his paintings distinctive from other famous artists. He developed the sfumato technique, a method of perfectly blending glazes/paints.

The Mona Lisa, for example, was a painting commissioned by a wealthy family. He was highly respected, even by major political figures, such as the king of France at the time (Francois I). He had designed countless inventions ahead of his time, such as blueprints for the airplane, submarine, and calculator. By studying dead bodies (30 cadavers to be exact), Da Vinci also had a much farther understanding of the human body than most. His notebooks are filled with complex studies of bones, organs, ligaments, and even the fetus. 
The works of Da Vinci are spread all over the globe due to his extensive fame. The Mona Lisa is in the Louvre Museum of France, while the Last Supper is in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. His priceless sketches and notes are kept in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

More specifically, Leonardo Da Vinci is well known through two of his most popular works, the Mona Lisa and the Vitruvian Man. These art pieces in particular have become cultural icons and are known throughout society. Modern artists have used these famous art pieces as reference or components for their own artwork. One such artist is Banksy, who often uses the Mona Lisa to convey political messages.
