In English this pillar means that Muslims must give 2.5 percent of their earnings each year to their poor neighbors or charity. The word Zakat means "purification." The money in medieval times would go towards the construction of public fountains or inns. Nowadays, Zakat pays for soup kitchens, clothing, shelter for the poor and supports building and running of orphanages and hospitals.

In English this pillar means that Muslims must fast during the month of Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims don't eat during the daylight hours, but at sunset they break their fast by eating usually dates and other food and beverages like Muhammad did. Muslims also perform the sunset prayer and attend a special prayer service.

In English this pillar means that Muslims must travel to the holy city Makkah on the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. All adult Muslims must perform the Hajj once in their lives. For five days Muslims dress up in simple white clothing and perform a set of rituals such as traveling to the Great Mosque where the Ka'bah is housed and circle it seven times. Upon arrival of Makkah, Muslims say the words, "Here I am, O God, at thy command!" After circling the Ka'bah, Muslims run along a passage between two small hills as Hagar did when searching for water for her baby Ishmael. They then drink from the Zamzam spring which appeared miraculously at Ishmaels feet. Muslims leave Makkah to sleep in tents at a place called Medina and in the morning they move to the Plain of Arafat to pray until sunset, asking for God’s forgiveness. Some Muslims climb Mount Arafat, where Muhammad preached his Last Sermon. After spending another night camped in the desert, they expel evil by casting stones at pillars representing Satan. Muslims may then celebrate afterward with a four day feast.

The Qur'an was made so that Muslims wouldn't get confused with all the other versions of Muhammad's messages.
