The Treaty of Fort Wayne

It was a cold autumn day, and our tribes are about to decide on one of the biggest treaties of our time. The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians are fighting for our land on this day. William Henry Harrison is on the other side of this battle for the land. Harrison is the current governor of the Indiana Territory and has a delegation of fourteen representatives with him to try to gain our land. And finally, four of our tribes must give up almost three million acres of their own land in the eastern part of America. Our tribes are receiving about two cents for every acre of our precious land. James Madison finally ratified this treaty allowed by the Senate to reinforce it. This means that the white people will now have our great soil for growing crops and having more resources than ever.

Not everyone from our tribes would sign this treaty, so Harrison offered us more money for the land, but this led to a bloody war with the whites and Shawnee leader, Tecumseh. He did not like selling our land to the white people and he even threatened any chief that would sell their land to the whites. This has ended our peace with the white people and now we do not trust them for what they have done to us multiple times. All they want is our land and not our peace with them, which we have always thought that was more important than anything else. This treaty, the Treaty of Fort Wayne, has caused war and more loss to us than ever.

Works Cited

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/blogs/national-museum-american-indian/2017/09/29/treaty-fort-wayne-1809/

http://www.famousdaily.com/history/treaty-of-fort-wayne.html

https://docs.google.com/document/d/10aRj0ewJknxezRy0pdS4g_w6GmUuvpcPOk5y4mO8msA/edit
