I am taking this course because it is important for pharmacists to recognize and understand the appropriate times to use a given antibiotic. Antibiotic overuse and misuse can lead to the growing issue of drug resistance, and by determining the best course of action for an infected patient, we can reduce the number of these incidents. I plan to use this antimicrobial knowledge as an intern by helping to select appropriate treatments for infected patients.

I hope to become comfortable deciphering which situations are best to use one antibiotic over another, and which situations may not require antibiotic therapy.

I feel exploring this interest will open up opportunities as well as build a base knowledge of the disease states I may encounter as a pharmacist. I am hoping this course arms me with knowledge on how to identify proper care of microbial infections and the reasons behind them so I may better educate my future patients (as well as because I feel its just neat to know).

As noted in the Stewardship post, I've heard about antibiotic resistance since the 1990's, and have always kept an open ear for news about it., especially after my daughter was wrongly diagnosed with an ear infection. The M.D. gave us a handful of antibiotic samples to treat it, but after checking my daughters ear when we got home, I realized she didn't have an ear infection and we didn't give her the antibiotics. Hopefully, this helped with the resistance problem. This course will help me to be as up to date as possible with ID for when I grow up and get a job in a pharmacy :)

I decided to take this elective course to gain exposure to infectious disease and antibiotics. The use of antibiotics is very prevalent in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and it is essential for the pharmacist to be knowledgeable on the appropriate use of them. I hope to learn the different uses of each antibiotic and be able to apply this information during my internship this summer. Eventually, the things I learn in this class can also help me to understand and get more involved with the antimicrobial stewardship program that they have at the hospital.

I chose to take this course based on the prospect of giving consultations in the summer. Consultations with patients on new antibiotics are often found to be lacking because of time constraints and work load. I hope to gain the knowledge to help those patients who are coming into the pharmacy on their worst days. When I finish this course, I would like to walk away confident in assessing the appropriateness of a medication and help the patient in their care.

I decided to take this course in order to learn about infectious diseases and more importantly the medications used to treat them. We do not get very much exposure to the medications until late third year which is too far out in my opinion considering their frequency of use. Hopefully this course will teach me more about the specific diseases and how to better address the drug choices and questions that may arise.

I decided to take this elective course to become more knowledgeable about antimicrobials. I really enjoyed my undergrad microbiology courses, and it was fascinating to look at topics from a “microbe’s perspective.” In this course, I hope to turn this perspective around and look at things from a medical viewpoint. Ultimately, I hope to take away knowledge about which antimicrobial is most appropriate for a particular infection and how pharmacists can impact proper and effective antimicrobial use.

I chose to take this class because I believe all pharmacists should have in-depth knowledge on this topic. Antibiotic use and resistance have been growing problems in the US and I feel knowledgeable pharmacists can help solve that problem. Also, most of us have been on antibiotics for one reason or another so I feel like it's very prevalent to daily practice.
