I recently became the chief talent officer in my firm. I have identified that few women are advancing from midlevel to senior leadership positions, and an internal audit showed that female managers tend to earn less than male managers even when in similar positions. The men don't seem to have trouble negotiating for what they want, and I think that's why they get ahead faster and make more money.
Q: How can I help our female employees become better negotiators?

Please advise

1. Encourage female employees to take time in making some groundwork/homework/research about the position’s salary before they accept new salary offer. Encourage them to ask questions about the work and compensation. This will give the employees more information to negotiate.

2. Advise female employees not to abruptly accept a salary offer but instead ask them to take time to consider and do homework.

3. Advise female employees to be confident when they talk about their credentials and stay firm with their capabilities.

4. Establish Women Network Group at work where women can discuss freely about work challenges and at the same time build their confidence and provide inspiration for women. In this way, women can better discuss their “worth” of their position.

5. Conduct training on how to make effective negotiation geared for women. The training can also encompass ways on how to strengthen emotional intelligence and indirectly support them to have the courage to ask. If training cannot be provided, equip them with videos or readings about preparing for negotiation.

6. Create “Gender equity” awareness in the organization. This awareness can show facts and videos about gender biasedness so that the whole organization is aware about gender gap existing in the organization.
