Hello and welcome to my Crisis and Trauma Resource Padlet. My name is Nitra Wilson, and I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Mental Health and Wellness Counseling with the goal of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

A bit about me: I am both a full-time parent and a full-time student. This degree holds personal significance, as I have a child who struggles with mental health challenges. In my free time, I enjoy early morning walks while listening to gospel music, which helps me find peace and reflection.

I am excited about this course and eager to deepen my understanding of how crisis and trauma can impact mental health. I aim to build practical tools throughout this course, particularly in developing cultural competence, which will allow me to provide compassionate and effective care to my future clients.

Mental health disorders are classified into different categories based on shared symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and other clinical features. The DSM-5 organizes these disorders into 20 broad categories, which are further divided into specific disorders.

While creating a reference guide for mental health disorders, I found the experience to be deeply meaningful. It helped me understand the various conditions and the psychological impacts of these disorders. This understanding has enhanced my ability to rule out other conditions, properly diagnose, and create treatment plans to better serve my clients. One aspect that particularly stood out was major depressive disorder, as I have personally dealt with it for the last nine years. Reflecting on my symptoms and recognizing how trauma can contribute to depression was eye-opening. It was especially fascinating to learn how early childhood traumas, if addressed in time, can be treated to help children avoid developing mental health disorders later in life by equipping them to process and manage their emotions.

This assignment reaffirmed my commitment to becoming a mental health professional, as many individuals are misdiagnosed throughout their lives. It also emphasized the importance of recognizing how people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds are often ignored or stigmatized in mental health care. This project has strengthened my resolve to continue my education and to focus on understanding and supporting these patients, ensuring they receive proper treatment without being marginalized.

Trauma influences human development at different stages of a person life (childhood, adolescence, adulthood). This trauma can alter a person cognitive, emotional and social development. As a counselor it is important to understand trauma and how it can impact individuals before offering interventions. I am to recognize that each individual responds to trauma differently and that I should meet clients where they are emotionally and psychologically. Ethically I should respect the pace at which the client wants to heal and avoid pushing them into treatment they are not ready for.

Childhood: Trauma can impair attachment, cognitive development, and trust-building.

Adolescence: Trauma might manifest in mood disorders, peer relationship struggles, or risky behaviors.

Adulthood: Trauma could lead to chronic mental health issues, relationship problems, or difficulty in forming stable careers.

Completing the Psychological First Aid (PFA) online course provided me with a wealth of knowledge and tools that will benefit me as a future Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). The course emphasized that psychological first aid is not limited to professionals—anyone can offer support in times of crisis, which feels especially relevant given current global challenges, like the Palisades fire. This course deepened my understanding of the critical role PFA plays in supporting those affected by traumatic events, such as natural disasters, and how emotional support is just as vital as physical assistance.

One of the key takeaways for me was learning the importance of staying calm when assisting someone in distress. The structured approach PFA teaches, actively listening, offering emotional support, and connecting individuals with necessary resources—ensures that individuals can navigate their emotions and move towards recovery in a more organized way. PFA focuses on offering essential care while being non-judgmental, allowing those affected by trauma to feel heard and supported during a highly stressful situation.

What stood out to me most was the emphasis on educating others about approaching individuals with sensitivity during a traumatic event. Whether the trauma is large-scale, like a natural disaster, or more personal, understanding how to interact with affected individuals with care and empathy is crucial. As I move forward in my mental health career, this course underscored the responsibility of counselors in fostering emotional recovery. It also reinforced the importance of building connections with individuals in crisis, ensuring that we provide both immediate and long-term support for their emotional well-being.

Domestic violence is a critical issue both in terms of individual safety and community well-being. Our presentation highlighted key aspects of recognizing, preventing, and addressing domestic violence within the context of crisis management. Working with my group was a positive experience overall. We divided the tasks based on our individual strengths, ensuring each aspect of the presentation was thoroughly researched and covered. One challenge we encountered was coordinating schedules to work together, but we overcame this through clear communication and planning. One success was how well we collaborated on creating a cohesive presentation, incorporating various perspectives on how domestic violence can be prevented and assessed through threat management protocols.

One significant challenge in addressing domestic violence is the hidden nature of the problem, as many victims are reluctant or unable to come forward. This makes it difficult to assess threats early on. Another challenge is the potential for escalation, which requires timely intervention to prevent further harm. This project has helped me realize my ability to contribute meaningfully in a group setting, especially when dealing with sensitive and complex topics like domestic violence. It also reinforced the importance of empathy, active listening, and careful assessment when working with individuals in crisis. I feel more confident in my ability to handle difficult situations and engage in thoughtful, ethical practices as a future counselor or crisis prevention professional.

Working on the Crisis Prevention and Threat Assessment assignment, particularly with a focus on domestic violence, was both a challenging and insightful experience. Rosa's case helped me better understand the depth of trauma victims endure. From an emotional standpoint, this assignment stirred a deep sense of compassion within me. It reminded me of how important the role of a counselor is in providing support to individuals like Rosa, who are not only seeking help for themselves but are also concerned about their children. The helplessness and anxiety she expressed in the case study made me reflect on the responsibility we have as counselors to help empower clients and provide a sense of safety.

This case also helped me understand the importance of understanding the steps to build rapport, ensure safety, and create an action plan helped me feel more confident in my ability to contribute to crisis prevention work in the future. It reinforced the need for proper training and awareness when addressing domestic violence, and it made me grateful for the opportunity to gain deeper insight into crisis management techniques. This assignment was a meaningful experience and showed the importance of empathy and professionalism.

Trauma-informed clinical strategies emphasize creating a therapeutic environment that prioritizes safety, trust, and respect, while being sensitive to the impact of trauma on clients' lives. These strategies focus on promoting equity by recognizing that trauma can affect people differently based on their backgrounds and life experiences, such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Inclusivity is fostered by ensuring that the therapeutic approach respects and accommodates the diverse identities of clients. By empowering clients, trauma-informed strategies encourage individuals to take control of their healing process, allowing them to make choices and regain a sense of agency that may have been lost due to trauma. Ultimately, these strategies aim to create a supportive space where all clients feel valued, understood, and capable of healing.
