This video was aired in 2015 on the "Last Week Tonight" show with John Oliver. The video gives an analogy from a falcon and a rodent to privacy and surveillance in America. He explains how you can't have both privacy and safety at the same time, and that surveillance may be necessary. The target audience appears to be anyone in the United States who is concerned about their privacy.

In 1984, Orwell portrays act of surveillance through the tele-screens and the Thought Police. Citizens aren't allowed to think normal "human" ideas and emotions otherwise they will be sentenced to death. They way the government knows who to punish is to watch everyone through the tele-screens. This video goes against Orwell's claims by saying that surveillance and supervision can actually be used for safety purposes, and that American citizens can't have perfect safety without the government listening in.

Americans should realize that our government is trying to help us, and that while monitoring our every move may not seem ideal it will eventually provide us with the safety and security we so desire.

This picture depicts a flowchart of how the government collects data through "Prism". This is the codename for the program that helps the NSA and FBI collect data from the users of services like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and other major technology companies.

In 1984, Orwell constantly shows the reader that surveillance is a bad thing. People today would both agree and disagree with him. In today's society people are constantly worrying about privacy and how organizations like the NSA and FBI can take away our sense of security. This picture/ artifact shows the way they do it, which is similar to the use of tele-screens and cameras in "1984". However the major difference between "Prism" and the tele-screens is why they are being used.

Our government wants to protect us and provide us with the safety we desperately want. The most effective way to do this is to monitor and survey everyone. While Orwell warned us about this he did not see the benefits of such an "evil"

This cartoon shows a man who is scared because everything around him is being used to spy on and watch him. The intended audience of this cartoon would be Americans who don't trust their government anymore.

This cartoon relates most to the thought police in Orwell's 1984. Many people in the book are so frightened by their government that they comply with anything they say even if they know it is wrong. This is very similar to the cartoon where the government is saying to trust them. In today's society, while many people still do trust our government many do not. This is because of actions taken by them to provide us with safety and security. When in reality it has pushed countless people away in fear which is exactly what happened in "1984".

Efforts taken by our government to protect us caused many to lose their trust. While surveillance attempts were supposed to help American citizens, many saw it was a form of control and lashed out dividing the country further. This is exactly what Orwell was warning us about in his book.

This definition of the Patriot Act shows why our government chose to start surveying citizens. Ultimately it was to protect us from anything like 9-11 to ever happen again.

The Patriot goes for and against Orwell's claims at the same time. Orwell predicted that our government will start to monitor us, however he believed it would be for malicious intentions to control every aspect of life. When in actuality this act was put into place to protect us from terrorists and other dangers. Orwell did not predict this usage of surveillance.

We as Americans should be thankful that such an act was created. While it may make us feel vulnerable it is doing the opposite and protecting us.

This video explains how the U.S. Government has used the Internet as a system to spy on their own citizens. It also talks about how the NSA gathers their information and how we the people discovered that this shady process was happening through Edward Snowden's whistleblowing.

This government surveillance is yet another form of censorship. Orwell warned us of this terror and when the public found out what was happening behind closed doors with our government they were outraged. It also states how the Patriot Act and its monitoring is directly breaking our 4th amendment. Our government has no right to view our personal life without good reason to believe a crime has or will be committed. Just as in 1984 how the Inner party controls all aspects of life, our government today is trying to do the same.

While the surveillance may be to protect us from future terrorist attacks and other dangers, it is still a violation of our rights. However there isn't much we can do to stop it.
