2) The difference between object and subject, is that one has meaning and beauty, whereas the other is just… there. As stated in Braiding Sweetgrass, “why is the world so beautiful? Is a question I hope we are all exploring” (Kimmerer,59). I believe that the author is trying to tell us that we should see more as subjects and things bringing beauty into the world, for this can/will positively influence how we care for everything on the planet.

There was this one time where a friend of mine came over for a sleep over. He asked me if he could listen to something as he falls asleep and I said sure. What he played was a Christian prayer, that made me question “ where I came from, and what I knew” (Kimmerer pg 58) because i have never be exposed to any other religion before.

In the book, the author describes how flowers and different objects made her think about her childhood “I was born to these flowers, and they came back for my birthday every year to celebrate” (Kimmerer pg56). This quote shows how she discusses the subject of child hood with the objects of flowers. The author seeing the flowers as individual objects allows her to have a deeper connection and understanding if she just viewed them as a subject. Instead she chose childhood as the subject as it’s a broader concept.

Everywhere has its own crisis’s. For us here we have incredible mother nature disasters. Such as forest fires, and floods. These are things we can potentially avoid. In the novel it states “ I wanted to do everything I could to bring those ways of knowing back into harmony.” (Kimmerer 62). When Indigenous respected their land and gave care there were less issues. Their knowledge is so valuable. If we were able to go back and use that knowledge they hold. There could be a chance of issues we may cause to be prevented. Obviously somethings are not going to be completely prevented but there’s the chance of helping it from being so harsh.

There has been I time where I have questioned my beliefs. I grew up believing god in a religious family. My brother and sister when they grew up started to question if he was actually real or not. I always stayed believing what I learned and didn’t grow an opinion from them. I found this quote online saying “our success is measured by personal beliefs, not by anyone else’s standards or beliefs.” Meaning that you shouldn’t get influenced to other beliefs and if you believe what you believe in and success will come.

In the book ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ Robin Kimmerer writes: “My Indigenous worldview had taught me to look for relationships and understand the threads that connect the word. To join instead of divide” (Kimmerer 61). When it come to the nature of the world, us as humans have become very disconnected and often think of ourselves as separate from plants and animals. This leads to us making a lot of selfish global decisions that lead to issues such as climate change, deforestation, species extinction and much more. If we could use more empathy and connect ourselves more with wildlife I believe that many of these issues could be reduced or prevented.

A lot of the time humans can’t see the world around us as having importance, since we are so preoccupied with our struggles. As the author states “The primary question was ‘How does it work?’ Plants were reduced to objects. They were not subjects”(Robin Wall Kimmerer 60). This shows that we don’t see Plants as adaptable, organisms capable of dying. treating the environment as an inanimate object is what is damaging it severely with deforestation, over fishing/hunting and pollution. If we were to treat the flora and fauna with the same respect that we give to pets and people then we wouldn’t be damaging our ecosystems.

as humans we benefit from plants, they keep us alive and there can be a fine line between treating them as a living being or as an object. the author stats “the two plants grow together, rather than living apart.” (kimmer 57) plants grow in a way to help the universe. as we start to study them, respect starts to get lost and people start to treat them as a object. if you can treat one of these organisms like that imagine if they would stop helping us humans.

I chose question 2 withe the quote ““who are you” to a scientific worldview where the questions were “what are you”… the plants were reduced to objects, not subjects” (Kimmerer 60). I think that if we started viewing the world as a living being, and not an object for us to use the world would be a better place that would be better to live in.

I chose Question #2

An object is essentially something of we can observe such as color, and height.

A subject is overviewing what that thing is about. Such as studying plants.

Taking time to appreciate the beauty of our world helps better our understanding of how and where things came to be. The author states, "I remember to pay deep attention to the living world, not only their names but also her songs" (Kimmerer, 63). She metaphorically writes 'songs' in the nature of how the plants bring her happiness and grateful for studying the world.

Peoples words can affect your thoughts and beliefs and it happens in all different circumstances and sometimes it can make you doubt all different things. “ The advisor made me doubt where i came from, what i knew” (Kimmer 58). This quote represents how people can affect your thoughts and belief. I have had this happen to me when i was trying to figure out what i wanted to do after school and a friend told me what i picked doesn’t suit me and i would not enjoy that job. By her saying that i decided to find another career path and didn’t realize that she changed my thoughts and what i thought i would enjoy.

In grade ten I wanted to pursue a career in science. My math teacher at the time told me that my grades weren’t high enough for it. Much like in the quote “That if I was interested in beauty, I should go to art school” (Kimmerer 58), She told me that I should start thinking about pursuing a career in a different field such as in the arts or social studies, due to that being the type of education my brain would naturally want to lean towards. When she told that that it didn’t sit right in me. In the end I chose to keep pursuing my education in math and went into pre-calculus eleven and twelve the following years.

In the section Asters and Goldenrod, the author dives deep into the differences between object and subject. The author describes how learning how the plants in nature affect each-other can teach more than taking the science path. This is shown when the author mentions how “[A] Navajo woman without a day of university botany training in her life—-spoke for hours, and I hung on every word”(Kimmerer 62). In my opinion, this proves how learning the relationships, and the object, can teach more about nature than learning the subject because it creates a deeper connection with us than it ever would with university.

People have stopped letting the world teach them and have started trying to learn about the world. Robin Kimmerer stated that “No one asked plants, “What can you tell us?” The primary question was “How does it work?”(Kimmerer 60). People have slowly stopped using traditional methods of doing things, this is because we are so focused on doing things as efficiently as possible even if it’s not the best way of doing it.

1) I have always connected my love for the scientific world with the beauty of the natural world. Similar to the authors experience, through surrounding myself with fellow science enthusiasts, I have constantly been told to focus only on utilizing my problem solving and critical thinking abilities in order to be a successful scientist. In the novel ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ the author explains that “the path of science trained [her] to separate, to break things down to their smallest parts, to focus on evidence and logic” (Kimmerer 61). In this quote the author describes how she has been taught to divide both worlds as opposed to unifying them. I resonate with and relate to this quote as I have been told very similar things in the past, which has often led me to question my knowledge and passion for the sciences.

(Kimmerer 58-59) I really relate with this quote because, when I was a kid, maybe 3-4 I always wanted to be in the military. My family has always disagreed and always insisted that I never joined and always told me that they knew what was best for me. I believed them and I regret it.

A current issue faced in my and other communities is clean water. The issue isn’t limited to science yet it’s limited to the people who want to make a difference. For instance in Braiding Sweetgrass it states “He told me that science was not about beauty, not about connection between plants and humans” (Kimmerer 58). This connects with following because just like the government they are pushing away from what I think is the more important message.
